I've noticed this from going on various forums- If someone asks a question, you'll get responses from "experts" that may not have any experience at all.

Case in point- look at all the people willing to give advise on relationships, yet you'll see the same people post in other threads admitting that they either have never had a relationship or can't make theirs work.

Also, there will be threads on weight lifting, and people will reply as if they know what they're talking about, but when they post a picture of themselves later on you get to see that they're not in shape at all.

What I'm getting at is this: Do you think that internet forums just give people an opportunity to role play a little bit?

PS- I am not flaming any specific person on here, so please don't take it the wrong way and flame me.

Isn't that the fun of it? If you come to AT for serious advice, you'd better have a good dose of common sense to act as a filter. :)

I think you're roleplaying for the fact of that you are bashing the real "experts".

I guess you're the expert on how people should behave on internet forums? :p

What I think is funny is when someone is suffering from some medical problem and asks here about whether they should see the doctor or not.

Yeah, those are my favorites. Most the girl threads are hilarious, too, though.

"This girl took off her shirt right in front of me! What do I do?!?!?!?!"

I agree to some extent; however, oftentimes people respond who really ARE experts on a given subject.

I've seen many very helpful posts on ATOT that answer very specific and/or technical questions in an inordinate amount of detail.

I'm surprised on almost a daily basis, the kind of advice people look for here....

Medical, parenting, law... You name it.

even the experts are all Bullshiite.
You don't need anything to be an 'expert',
other than convince some people you know what you're talking about.

As an expert on internet forums, I can tell you that this is definately not the case.

So, basically what you are saying is.. everyone who posts on internet forums must have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express? :)

If you believed everyone on internet forums, the average guy is hung like a horse, and the average female is a bombshell. Joe Fat Ass is a world olympian, and some doofus with the nickname of "OrkieIam" (made that up right now, no offense if that's really your nick) is God's personal messenger, and anyone who disagrees with him is going to burn.

Unless of course you actually know what you're talking about. We have doctors, lawyers, accountants, etc here.......it's a pretty safe bet they'll give you good advice if you ask them about something in their respective fields.

Yes, that is true. I'm sure that there are in fact people that are experts that post, but to someone who is sitting at their PC reading the replies, there is nothing to differentiate a real expert from some 11 year old kid who jumped on his parents' PC.

Same goes for any site you go to. I'm sure you've heard of situations where you may think you're talking to a 25 year old chick, but in reality it may be some perverted 50 year old guy who is pretending to be a 25 year old chick.
