I intend to run ut2004, doom3, hl2 all in 1280x1024 with 4x AA and 8x AF with a minimum of 60 FPS without over clocking, rather I shall passively cool my CPU within a custom build case that I shall construct. Can a 75$ processor run these applications and will they benefit from the 20% performance increase 64 operating systems and software will provide in the future? I think not. Also I do not upgrade every year, I shell out a little more and run it for a long time.

hey too each his own but I much rater shell out 75 bucks every 18 mounths to be just behind the bleading edge than to spend $800 every 3 and spend the 2nd and 3rd year with only a mediocre performer.

also in 18mounths when 64bit has caoght on thier will be a 75 dollar chip that will blow away a fx-51.

Why not get the 30W 1.4 EE version then. That should be a monstorous overclocker cheap. Either way if your planning for a 64 bit future I think you're on to something here:)

Edit and if you don't want to OC you stil win as noted gettnig the 2.2 chip.

Check this out:

Hi, just wanted do give you some info wrt. Opteron overclocking. I got the CEP revision of 144 from Newegg for $270.

The chip is indeed a great alternative to FX51. I have it running currently at 240mhz FSB on Leadtek Nforce3 board. Had Asus SK8N but the Leadtek K8NW is really the only proper choice for overclocking this chip. It does much better than the Asus board because it truly locks PCI, features great voltage control and has a 2.5 HT divider which allows you to run HT at 600mhz with high FSB (Asus only does 2x or 3x). Even with that OC, I really don't think the chip is breaking any sweat, for one it runs at 1.55v, so plenty of headroom left there although there's only so much you can do with FSB w/o multipliers.

Overall, a combination of Leadtek K8NW and Opteron 144 is a one 2.2ghz kickass combo. Just wanted to give you heads up. . . .

I see a lot of kids buying A64's and leaving out this truly outstanding performer which is cheaper to boot. Perhaps a little followup to your previous article would help giving them some appreciation.

only downside of going that route is you drop quite a bit into ram to get a chip that fast. registerd ram that runs at 240fsb isn't exactly common
