lol: NZ actors unions try to play hardball w/ Peter Jackson, New Line, Warner Bros.

No Lifer
Cliffs:

Australian union represents (MEAA) approx 10% of NZ actor workforce
MEAA complains that Hobbit production (in NZ) is "non-union"
Peter Jackson says FUCK YOU union
Warner Bros/New Line says "if you fucks don't stop this shit, we're going to GTFO out of New Zealand"

"Motion picture production requires the certainty that a production can reasonably proceed without disruption and it is our general policy to avoid filming in locations where there is potential for work force uncertainty or other forms of instability. As such, we are exploring all alternative options in order to protect our business interests."

Hopefully their accounting methods will provide that the movie is never profitable and the pot never gets any money in it to distribute to these idiots.

Yeah, because, you know, they can't afford to pay a wage any higher than they absolutely have to. It's terrible the plight of the movie industry.

I mean, the previous 3 movies only made a $BILLION in profit.

they should smoke pot like U.S. union members and mellow out. Otherwise instead of a little acting work... they will get zero acting work.

you need movies like lord of the rings to pay for shitbombs like golden compass. why don't you take a stab at how much that movie lost?

besides, why the fuck do you pay someone more than you have to?

supply/demand.

Also, @ that link you sent me, a 94M budget for LOTR:ROTK is laughable, at best.

I'm all for unions if they provide quality workmanship and expertise. Though unions grow corrupt over time and end up offering sub-par performance for more pay.

What other industry has a business model that allows for 50%+ shitbombs?

So, it's ok for the company to control the entire supply of work and negotiate from that single, strong unified position, but it's NOT ok for a union to control most of the supply of skilled workers in order to strengthen their position?

Interesting double standard. I'll be the first to point out the many flaws of unions, but to think that it's not ok for workers to bargain collectively but it IS ok the other way around... it's hypocritical.

That was the first google hit. IMDB also agrees with the estimate. Maybe they're getting it done so cheap by paying all their workers substandard wages.

Welcome to the entertainment industry

The union in question here doesn't represent the majority of skilled workers. Also, what skill is there to being an extra? A: None
