Density and volume. A cubic pound of fat will be larger in size than a cubic pound of muscle.

lifting weights will help with her metabolism. as well she will need it to get toned firm ;). She shouldnt worry about losing weight as much as just getting in shape. weight lifting is a great way to get in shape mixed with cardio. Although make sure she isnt eating protein bars and drinking muscle milk all the time and not trying to break records in bench. as far as bow flex that isnt weight lifting that is resistance training.

The whole protien thing is a myth. If you want the leanest of lean muscle, then eat your heart out. Pasta works fine too and it has very little protien.

People who keep saying crap like you have to eat right and you have to eat lots of protien are easily show that they have never lifted weights before.

And she is right, muscle burns a ton more calories than fat.

No, but it is roughly twice as dense.

...meaning.... it's heavier...

Density has nothing to do with weight, only volume.

What are they teaching in school these days?
whatever they're teaching in school, you didn't learn either.

density = mass/volume

=|

A lb is a lb no matter if it is muscle, fat, boogers, or feathers. How can a lb of something weigh more than a lb of something else? It can't!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You won't lose weight, per se, but you will lose fat and gain muscle, which will make you look much slimmer.

Muscle = heavier than fat.

1) As said above, it can help lose weight.

2) Almost no female truely cares about weight, they care about volume. A pound of muscle has much less volume than a pound of muscle. So REPLACING that fat with toned muscle will accomplish her REAL goal of looking smaller. "Losing weight" is a misnomer, it should be called "losing volume".

Not quite; Fat does not magically turn into muscle

If I toss my fat girlfriend and replace her with a muscular girlfriend, has my fat girlfriend magically turned into a lean one?

His post in no way implies that fat turned into muscle.

Exactly, you need to have PROTEIN which generally means eating more. You can't turn fat into muscle, you can burn off the fat, consume protein and supposedly gain muscle at the same time but it's extremely difficult to lose fat and gain muscle at the same time. I told her she needs to set her priorities, 1. being that she loses fat then gain muscle..

LOL, check the nutritional value on tuna or lean chicken. They're all good calories. If you tell your sister to not eat empty calories, and eat 5 meals a day (good food, not junk), and exercise, she will be much slimmer.

I'm far from on a protein only diet, but my diet does focus on protein. The carbs I do eat are all complex, with the vast majority being whole grains. About the only simple carbs I get are those added to some foods and breads, and the dextrose I take with my creatine.

Are you going to tell me I've never lifted weights before and don't know how to pack on muscle???

The fact of the matter is, you need to get enough protein to pack on muscle. This does not mean you can't have grains, fruits and veggies. Quite the contrary. However, if muscle gain is your primary focus you should be taking in at least 1 gram of protein for every lean lb of body weight.

Huh? Wtf? What are you saying she'll burn more calories eating a lean steak opposed to eating a chunk of fat? WTF?

OMG you can't be this dumb. Muscle IN YOUR BODY burns more calories JUST BY BEING THERE than the fat IN YOUR BODY does.

Simply put you if you have more muscle mass you'll burn more calories CONSTANTLY, even if you're just sitting in a chair neffing on ATOT .

Because he said I got pwned since his reasoning is that he lost weight because of simply lifting when it's clear he lost it from the cardio from the treadmill...

Sure you're much better off at losing weight when you build muscle because of a higher metabolism but you don't lose 10lbs from lifting weights, unless of course you're starving your self. He lost the weight because he is doing cardio.

I know that lifting weights doesn't lose much fat because I was doing it for three Plus months when I first began to work out and all I was doing was gaining weight and becoming stronger, not losing fat. I eventually figured out I really did need the cardio and began to use the ellipitcal, soon enough I lost 15LBs in about a month.

I'd lift weights then use the ellipical every day, worked like a charm.

Yes, it worked for me. Unless it was the steriods in milk, than protien does not seem to matter as much as they'd have you believe.

And Amused, sure you may be following the book and gaining muscle but I for one have gotten great results and I never gave a rat's ass what I ate. Turns out that eating pasta is something recommended against and I eat it ever day. Guess what, I gained tons of muscle.

My conclusion is that weight training is 90% of the pie, eating right is the other 10%. You can still do just fine without the by the book diet.

You know what, I will take that back. It couldn't have been the steriods in milk because I have been drinking organic for many years now, eat a lot less protein than suggested and I still am solid. And to top it all off, I have never taken anything sold at GNC, not even a protein shake. Maybe diet is important for the 1% body fat body builder but if you can live with 5-10%, then I wouldn't worry about diet so much as long as you are eating healthy.
