I was buying a new mouse for my computer and there was this customer getting really pissed at the employee and he was explaining how something "shorted in the case" and they'll assume liability for it.

I guess they destroyed their computer. Are they just not careful these days? I remember when 386/33SX was considered blazing fast, people were so careful and they used static strap and followed basic rules.

I don't even see techs using ESD straps and working on it with it powered is a common practice so it seems...

I dont know bout PC stores, but i know i never use a strap and often work on the computer when it is on. Havent had an issue yet... well cept for a heatsink that wasnt on properly fell off the cpu while it was on which in turn shorted out the cpu...

what can you do when its on? other than plug, unplug fans. at least, thats all ive ever had to the balls to do. i know hdd can be hot swappable, but what else? im thinking your talking about pci cards, etc.

i never use a strap. i do make sure to touch the chassis of the case to ground out.

You can do things like installing screws to mount fan, HDD mounting etc. You can drop the screw on a hot motherboard and things will fry.
