LOL.. Farkers hate Seagate; but we don't. Funny to see such huge differences..

Under the fark.com headline for Seagate buying Maxtor, the posts started piling in about how everyone hates Seagate..

link

But from what I've read on AT Forums, it seems everyone loves Seagate - as do I. It's hard for me to imagine people that like WD (like on fark) over Seagate..

It's funny to see such a huge difference between the forums on the best brand of hard drives..

a Hard Drive debate?

Do I need to walk around and clean the sand out of you all's vaginas?

We have a winner.

90% of the issue is not with the drives, but with the rebates.
All the Farkers are just cheap bastards.

Just going off of my experiences guys.

I deal with shatloads of different hardware and from my experiences the big three seem to have the same mortality rate.

I have to agree, Seagate is horrible at handling rebates. I try to stay away after I got jipped for a $50 MIR not too long ago.

However, in terms of quality... I think this pretty much sums it up:

1. Seagate
2. Hitachi
3. Samsung
4. Western Digital
5. Maxtor

Eh?
I have a Athlon 750 which I bought in 2001. The Maxtor HD had a three year warranty and during those three years, I went through 4 HDs. 8-9 months and the drive starts spewing errors, producing horrible metallic scratching sounds etc. The fourth one which is in the computer right now started doing the same thing last week.
Naturally, I brought a WD for my new computer...

I have never had a maxtor drive fail... Just goes to show YMMV.

Well I'd have to say that I've got 2 Seagate hard drives going strong (they're both 7200.8 models which apparently is the death model!)

I've got a 200GB and 300GB... I use them both daily (one is in my server and one is in my DirecTV TiVo)

They are both great drives.

I'm also a western digital man, I can't begin to tell you how many western digital drives I actually have (it's over 10 drives that are currently operational and being used)

I have one maxtor that I've had for about 4 years now, it's only a 40GB but I use it in my server and so far it's done alright.

I also have just one hitachi drive in my laptop. It's a 60GB hard drive and I've literally kicked the crap out of it but it just keeps ticking.

I have a 20GB Toshiba hard drive in my iPod, and that little pissant keeps going strongly, but I don't really use it every day and it's not really used to the extent of the other drives.

So, out of all those drives, guess which ones I've had fail? 3 Western Digital's have bit the dust on me... out of about 40 or so hard drives I've used in my life time at my house, 3 have died. A 40, 60 and 80GB have all died. But, what are you going to do.

All in all your experiences with hard drives will be good and bad. Hard drives will fail, sometimes one brand will fail more than others. It's just basically the luck of the draw. Since Seagate has a 5 year warranty I feel a little bit better knowing that if the drive is troublesome and does die, it's got 5 years to do it.

One thing about hard drives is that everyone has horror stories about brand X. While there may be trends that have minor effects on the overall defect rates between brands, they are definitely not significant.

Any blanket statement comparing the quality of drives from any of the big manufacturers is pretty much wrong. About the only valid comparison is between specific models/revisions (and even then it's usually not overly significant).

Of course, whenever a group of people gather there's the chance of a favorite emerging and then people within that group are tempted to follow that trend.

i'm a seagate guy here. simply because my maxtor died and my seagate hasn't.

in fact my 2gb drive from 8 years ago made by seagate is still running strong.

i <3 wd for the raptors though.

Seagate for LIFE!
I've got 2 120GB 7200.7 SATAs running strong, and now two new 160GB 7200.9s with NCQ, they're faaaaaaast as hell.
