What. the. fack?

8739847398 buttons
WiFi + Smartphone App LOL with ability to send error log to mfg for troubleshooting
8478574 shiny LED lights
1219823 modes - turbo, handwash, activewear, federal & state returns

All look uber fancy with Chrome finish and looks prettier than luxury cars.

I'm looking at these LG ones. They're not even expensive - $700.

"All"?

They're not all high tech. You can easily buy a washer and dryer set today with no more tech than was available in 1970.

I'll say the fancy modes are probably overkill but my clothes are much cleaner than the old top loader could achieve. Plus, the late capacity ones are awesome at bulky items. On the flip side they're not as durable unfortunately.

I just had to replace the control electronics in decade old Whirlpool... luckily eBay meant total cost was under $100. Our LG, older version of what you link, sprung a leak in the hose between the soap dispenser and the drum. Not sure why that happened but it was about a $60 part.

To justify the coming $300.00 repair bill. Plus to count down to the end of Warranty and break down the week after.

If my washing machine can't bluetooth connect to my google glass, whats the point in having it? I need to know how much time is left. Constantly.

Because it sells.

Listen. There are only 3 reasons why anything is the way it is when it comes to human decisions. Because it sells, because people are stupid, or because people are crazy.

You are incorrect. The third reason is BOTH it sells and people are stupid.

You'll pay a small premium, but some people swear by Speed Queen for old-fashioned durability.

We love our SQ washer and dryer. No electronics, all mechanical controls, made in USA, built like a tank. My wife's good friend bought some fancy top of the line washer and dryer 3 years ago - the washer all-electronic control panel has been repaired 3 times under the extended warranty. She's giddy about not having to pay for the repairs due to the extended warranty, but there's only 1 year left on it and if the things keep breaking, she'll have to replace it. You can't justify $300 repairs every year on a $700 washer.

Best part of the Speed Queen buy was that our local tiny appliance dealer beat the best internet price I could find, and they included free delivery, install, and haul away of the old ones.

This is sadly the future we live in. Soon they will all be connected to the internet and won't work otherwise and this will go for lot of products. When machine is more than 5 years old it will keep nagging you to buy a new one, perhaps even stop working altogether "for your safety" unless you want to pay a monthly subscription. Or heck they'll just do that from the beginning.

I'm all for technology but I hate technology just for the sake of technology. It makes things more complicated than they have to be and in some cases even reduces your freedom, such as when they add DRM. I could totally see them start doing that where you need to buy detergent from the company that makes it, it would then read a QR code and validate it via internet before the machine starts. We are not far from that. In fact, there's some new juicer out that's all the rage, and that's exactly how it works. People buy this crap because they think it's cool. :/

My washer and dryer are older style mechanical but I think those will become harder and harder to find. Even fridges are starting to go "high tech". My parents just bought a new fridge and already had to get it served twice. The issue is when they add tech to devices like this it's all built down to a price so it's just adding more layers of failure, and it's what they want.

I heard good things about Speed Queen, my first time even hearing about the brand was when I moved into my house and there was this OLD SQ dryer that came with the house, it was hard wired into the electrical panel, I discarded it because it was VERY old, the inside was rusted etc, but knowing that they are considered good machines I would buy that brand. Downside is because it's probably considered niche it's probably really hard to get. All the stores are going to be pushing the high tech LG and Samsung etc ones.

I'd like to eventually upgrade to a front loader as they tend to have more capacity, no agitator in the way so you can put a whole comforter in there.

Frankly I'm surprised the Koreans still import their machines from Korea. Transporting appliances can't be cheap. Then again the Whirlpool I mentioned previously was made in Germany and the electronics that failed are Italian. I guess they must have outsourced to Bosch.

Replaced my dryer recently, entire thing is a touchscreen. Not like a phone, but like a piece of tinted glass with LED's underneath & some type of capacitive touch system. I miss analog buttons, although it is easy to clean.

Pro tip: Buy a much larger dryer than washer. That way your family can stuff all they want into the washing machine & it will still get dry in a reasonable amount of time.

Steam will have an Appliance section. At least you'll be able to browse Games to buy while doing Laundry though.

Of course I was incorrect. I was only joking. But you managed to miss the real reason it was incorrect. There are not 3 reasons for why anything is the way it is. I just wanted to see who would react to it and how.

I had the same reaction when I went shopping for them the last time. All kinds of gadgets that I don't need or care about. I saw some that advertised that you could change the tones the machine makes when it turns on or is done. Just upload any mp3 you want! The only thing that I wished our washer came with was a reversible door

Yup, this. I love my SQ pair.
