4GB

For instance, when you install 4GB of memory in a 32-bit Windows system (the most common version; 64-bit systems are typically used only by high-end users), your system will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB. Is the problem bad memory?

Relax, there isn't a problem with the memory. Windows allows for 4GB of memory to be addressed, but this isn't 100 percent the same as having 4GB of physical memory.

I thought it was kinda funny. It's like...dropping the professional attitude to make something clear.

on a more serious note. I was planning on putting 4 gigs in for an XP installation. Are they saying it wont see/utilize all 4 gigs? Should I only buy 3 instead?

I was gonna try changing my swap/page file to 0 to see if it will then see the full 4 gigs, anyone try this?

I have 4 GB, but my system only recognizes 3.25 GB.

would you suggest only buying 2 or 3 then?

as for freshprince's question; for some reason XP needs a page file I thought. When I did away with mine I didn't see a whole lot of gain and If I remember correctly it had some weird issues.

here is a screen shot I have of mine. http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/brigy86/pagefile.JPG

after looking at it I changed both the max and min. to the recommended 1533.

I dunno. I don't know how big the performance boost is from having interleaved memory... but to have 3 GB interleaved you'd have to buy 2 512 sticks, and I'd rather have big sticks than small sticks since it's only going to get bigger in the future.

I've heard you shouldn't turn the pagefile off... not sure what problems it could cause. I'd think it shouldn't cause problems, but I'm not an OS expert.

Do you only have 1 GB currently? I wouldn't turn the pagefile off with only 1 GB.

I remember hearing that the missing amount when you install 4GB is due to the video memory getting mapped into that space or something. Never looked it up, though.

Hey here's something I've been wondering lately, maybe someone can answer this...

On those cheap video cards where they advertise some amount of memory, but only 1/2 or 1/4 of it is onboard - does the card HAVE to steal that extra memory from the system, or can it be configured to run without it? I need to get another video card to run my third monitor. I don't need 128 MB or 256 MB of video memory, I just want to use the on-board memory.
