me: Okay, go ahead and click the "release" button
her: "Release" or "release all"?
me: "Release"
her: Oh, sorry., I just pushed "release all" ...well, lemme just close it and I'll reopen it so I can do it right...
me: No, that won't be necessary; I-
her: Too late... but it will be up in a second...

LOL! I remember those days back at TCOM. <shudder> I'm glad I don't deal with support anymore.

Ahhh... good old tech support. I used to do helpdesk too, for an ISP.

"Well, it sounds like there's a lot of static on the phone, that's probably why you're getting slow connection speeds and disconnects"
"So there's something wrong with my phone?"
"No, most likely the phone lines"
"This is a brand new phone line"
"No I mean the lines between your house and the provider"
"But we're talking on it now"
"But somewhere in between the signal is picking up static, or there's a bad junction box, you should call the phone company and have them perform a line check"
...
"The phone company checked the line and they said it's fine."
"They didn't hear the static?"
"They said there was static, but the line is fine"
"Well the phone company only ensures line reliability up to a 9600 baud modem"
"What the hell does that mean?"
"That means that even though we're talking on the phone fine, your modem isn't able to establish a connection fast enough without disconnecting"
"so you're saying my modem is bad?"
"no your modem is fine"
"So it's your equipment?"
"no our equipment is fine"
"so what are you telling me?"
"Well since you live in such a rural area, there isn't anything anbybody can do"
"This is $&*#@! Cancel my account, I'm going with AmericaOnline"

You guys ever see Jimmy Fallon on SNL do his Tech Support Guy Character?
I find it extremely funny because he is SPOT ON!

Nerd Alert, Nerd Alert...

Just cuz you guys know everything about computers, it doesn't mean that everyone else does. They probably are spending their time bettering the world rather than "neffing" or posting WTF all over the ATOT forums.

It may be funny to you but you guys need to realize a lot of people are still ignorant about computer use. Try and help them rather than mock them. We'll all live a happier existence if you can do that.

Thank you.

Over the phone, I was very professional. I didn't laugh, snicker, or even smile. It's not a big deal, man. I posted it here because i know people here would find it funny. Maybe, just maybe, someone might come in to this thread when they got home from a stressful day at work or something and have a good laugh. That's what I aim to do... brighten your day :)

That's actually quite a natural thing to do if you don't know what you are doing. I suppose you knew everything about computers when you started too right?

Nope. In fact, almost everyone was running AIM in my training class (chat-programs that included file-transfer abilities were forbidden at the company but most of us kept it quiet and did it anyway). When the instructor told us to open this nifty program and click the "release" button, he laughed his ass off (face turning red, holding belly, etc.) when we all were like "HEY WHAT HAPPENED TO AIM!?" :D :p

Yes, I was (and can be) a clueless newbie. I know I've given ViperGTS my share of laughs for asking the kind of questions and reacting to normal problems the way I did. I don't expect everyone to know everything. Life would be boring. But it's funny to see people's perspectives on things when you never thought about that perspective. I hadn't ever thought about closing and reopening the proggy cuz that's not how it's done. It's just funny. That's how our sick society works. ;)

Yeah, I've had one of those. Amazingly enough, I was annoyed that I actually got one -it wasn't funny really. Some old lady.

You know, I have worked several different jobs spanning several different fields in my lifetime and I can attest that every occupation has its inside jokes. If he had laughed directly at the customer, called her a fool or something then that would have been unprofessional. But there?s nothing wrong with him coming here and posting his amusing tales to others who share his line of work. This is simply human nature. It doesn?t necessarily mean he considers himself superior to those who call him for technical help.
