Well let me type this all again. Stupid laptop crashed.
Ok, a lot of people get confused by this. Let me try and explain.
First, these are the games I've been playing lately:
Q3
MDK2
Deus Ex
Homeworld
Battlezone 2
That and my usual round of checking out the latest game demos.
So why the V5. Well the first reason is that it plays all of these games perfectly. Granted, the Ultra will be faster, but playing perfectly is perfect for me. 🙂
There are two main issues.
First is image quality. I will use Homeworld as my primary example.
Consider the 16-bit quality normally found in Homeworld. It is BAD. Really bad. There is terrible banding everywhere. Without FSAA, there is terrible aliasing. With the V5 I can run the game at 10x7x16 with 4x FSAA. It plays great and looks amazing. But that is not all. You talk about the AA quality on the V5 being bad. That is VERY incorrect. First, the V5 is cleaning up the edges a good deal better, but now I go in and adjust the LOD Bias and get VERY clean and crisp textures and it just looks stunning.
Second reason is stability. Now NVIDIOTs claim left and right that there aren't any stability problems. And granted, there aren't a lot but they are still there. Consider today: I install a GTS with the latest *official* reference drivers. Do my restarts, pop open Q3 and bam I get a blue screen. No reason why, it just happens. I couldn't explain it but it did. Another example, when I did have the Ultra in my system Battlezone 2 would lock on me. It was random too. It would just happen, so I had to keep saving my game just in case. Now people claim that if users are having problems they likely don't know what they are doing. Well not to pat myself on the back, but I think I know a bit of what I'm doing. 🙂 But it comes down to that the V5 has yet to cause me a single issue. It just works really well
So it comes down to 3 things:
1) Performance (not as fast as the Ultra, but up with the GTS and plays everything great).
2) Image quality (with FSAA, LOD Bias) it is just amamzing
3) stability (not a lot of problems with GTS/Ultra, but enough to irriate me
Those are my reasons. I do have the Ultra in a system, but I don't really use that for anything but screwing with NVIDIA's tech demos and stuff.
