Logmein is ending their free version as of March21

Any recommendations as to a free program to replace it?
thanks

I just heard from my friend who also is a computer shop owner. He not only recommended teamviewer but we did a quick session and its ridiculously easy to use. Blows away logmein in that area.

Free for non commercial use.

What I liked about LogMeIn is I could check online computers through an interface. With Teamviewer, I have to try to login to see if the machine's online. Not a huge deal, but checking first is more convenient. I had switched to Teamviewer since they support GNU/Linux. I was gonna roll my own solution, but that worked well enough, and I'm lazy :^D

No you don't. Create an account and add them to your list, it shows up like a buddy list in AIM, if the PC is online, it shows under the Online section...

Yes, BUT... if no one is logged in OR they closed Teamviewer, you have to have action on the satellite end to gain access to the computer. Other than that, Teamviewer is solid all the way.

I use Teamviewer's 'buddy list' to see when my daughter is logged on to her laptop after bedtime... :sneaky: Busted!

LexusKiller, what is with your obsession with open source/GNU programs? 🙂 I understand that with proprietary software you are at a mercy of a company's decision, but often(>50%) proprietary software does a better job than open source variants.

A note on Teamviewer, it doesn't seem as solid as Logmein. At least once every couple of weeks, I'd have one of our companies business partners log into a client machine because TV is not responding while Logmein works just fine.

To me, Logmein is the best but the recent changes in policy and pricing and the abruptness of many of these changes leave a very bad taste.

It's not an issue in this case, aside from both programs I used being proprietary, and being too lazy to create a proper solution.

Generally, convenience shouldn't trump freedom. A golden cage is still a cage, and you do what you're told when you're put in a cage. You get spied on, monetized without recourse, and restricted in any manner of small and large ways. I also disagree with your percentage assessment, but that's subjective, so I'll let it stand.

Anyway, thanks for mentioning it. I'm gonna look into getting off Teamviewer, and using only libre tools to give support. Whether it's easier or harder, at least I'll know what I have, and won't be getting emails telling me what I have is changing due to non-technical reasons; IOW, cause my jailer said so :^)
