Wow, that's a sexcellent price.

I have the z-680 speakers right now. Worth it to upgrade?

Edit: NM, just checked shipping. $61.11 for the cheapest method (ground) LMAO, pass.

Wow threadcrapping. You're not going to find this any cheaper ever again. Amazon it's $300. Not including $30 shipping.

Not worth the upgrade, in fact your z680 is better; this setup is the exact same driver as in your z680, except the woofer on the sub for this is 10", while yours is 8". That makes this driver underpowered (187 watts for 10" is weak) and thus your z680 will hit the kick of a drum more accurately than the z5500 does.

I've got these speakers, I paid over $200 two years ago when they were on sale. This is an incredible deal.

As far as the cost of shipping, the set weighs around 55 lbs. I recall the UPS drivers face when I told him the box he carried to my door only had a set of speakers in it. :)

Nice find OP! Here's to the new guy  (he only has 3 posts)!

I have a set of Z-680's and I paid $250 for them and got a $50 Gift card (so around $200). It was one of the better purchases I made for my PC.

I still like my z-5450 with the wireless rear channel and receiver , but this is a great deal, I would pick this up and since the rebate is not through tigerdirect, the deal is even better. Basically the rebate covers shipping. Good find.

Just got one at the store in Raleigh, NC. They had 4 still there so now its 3 :) Just hooked them up and as usual its logitech's crappy quality, but for computer speakers 5.1 at this price its pretty tough if not impossible to beat.

I would be Very careful with that statement, a 10" will typically hit lower than a 8" and as far as it being underpowered, well thats all dependent on how efficient the actual sub is. They may have thrown in a more efficient 10" woofer in there which would not make it underpowered compared to a inefficient 8" woofer.

Make sure you hook up your Z680 speakers to it, and sell the oem ones on Ebay. The older set of speakers sound better, and its night and day difference. Or at least for me it is because Im anal :)
You just cannot beat these for a cheap, but kick ass sounding, pc set up, or in my case Home Theater.
Never been happier.
Mine have been going for 2 years, and abused HARD. Always loud, all ways turned to the max, +4, on everything, a good 4-8 hours a day. Great part of having the hosue alone while the kids and wife are goon during the weekdays.
My old Klipsch set these replaced, though they sounded good, but couldnt turn the volume, or bass to the max with out the sub hitting, lasted less then 6 months. These, sound the same, IMO, plus you can crank to the max, with max everything, and never have the bass pop, no matter what you throw at it. Plus you got the easter egg 2x display, and can even make them go louder upto 100% + 11. Google it to see how. Makes your ears bleed, and only at +11 do you have to start to turn the bass down for the sub starts to pop, but by that point your ears have popped, and are bleeding bad.

I went through almost all of the 4.1's and the 5.1 setups available.

I started from the ever so popular Klipsch pro media v2-400 back in the late 90's to the Logitech 4.1 Z560's (the bass was more power than the Klipsch, but the sound quality wasn't as good) then eventually to the Z-680's, which didn't totally blow away the Z560's (in fact the Z560's had better bass response than the 680's) but had the digital decoding. Then it went from the Z680's to the Klipsch 5.1 Ultra (which is currently on my system) and got the z5500 for my dad. The klipsch still has higher sound quality however, lacks the digital receiver (which is HUGE). However, the sound quality IS better, but not by very much. (IMO)

But wont that defeat the whole cost over performance thing then for some if they all just went hell with paying $250 for a nice complete set, I will save up for a year or more and buy a $400 receiver, $1000 front speakers, a $800 sub, dont forget the semi matching front for $400, and some rears for $450?

I have always agreed with you that going with separate pieces is the way to go, but for some, you just cannot beat the cost to performance of these if your on a tight budget, and to get better then how they sound your going to have to pay out the ass to get close to the same, or better sound quality they produce. I mean you got to remember that for $250 your getting more then just speakers your getting a 4 input, DD and DTD decoding 500watt RMS receiver, and a 188Watt RMS 10" Sub as well as the MATCHING all around speakers. Just a single receiver alone will be over $250 not including the speakers and sub. And at that point, why are you spending a ton more to get the same sound? Another thing to keep in mind is the Logitechs have 8ohm output. YOUR ARE NOT stuck with the oem front, rear, and center speakers. Just like any other receiver you can swap them out for other speakers if you want to make them sound more to your taste. Just make sure they are 8ohms, not huge floor speakers, and can handle about 60watts rms. Most nice shelf speakers will do just fine. I am in the process of going all Vegas on mine, atm I have 2, but once I have all 5 matching ones they will replace the oem ones again. But my other point is, your not stuck with the oem speakers if thats the down side to these as well. For $250 its just so damn hard for you to come close to what these can do for you, for so little.

I just dont get why people have to come into threads and say, for more $$$ you can have XXX, but thats not the point with these. And I am not talking out my ass when I can say they sound damn good. I have owned them all, still do, for I have even a HT in a box in my bedroom right now, a $400 Samsung, and right now I even have a receiver running this rig, a 5.1 Pioneer with Cerwin Vega speakers, and the Z5500's still sound better then them all.

BUT YES you can get better with more money, BUT not everyone has more, nor maybe do they care. I just wish that half the people who bash on these would actually buy them and put them in their homes, then they, LIKE ME, would go "DAMN for $250, these are the shit!"
And yes AGAIN you can have better for more cash, but in the $250 range there is nothing that can come close to these, with the same features of digital decoding, rms power vs max power, matching speakers all around, and a 188watt rms 10" powered sub, and to get close to these you will have to spend over $1000 in separate pieces just to match them. Im nto saying you cant get better, EVER, just saying for $250~ you cant.

I agree! The guys over at AVS Forum almost talked me into dropping $1000+ on a new system. I'm not an audio nut; I just want something nicer than my crappy TV speakers for watching movies. I just ordered these a few days ago form amazon.com, and hopefully everything will work out great.

You can also get these pretty cheap at buy.com -- 199 w/ free shipping after 40 rebate. Google checkout you can get them for 189 shipped.

Yeah, if you have never had a good set of speakers from a clean source then you wont even care, but once you have a really nice sounding system then you cant go back... So I would suggest to just stay cheap! I cant even listen to music/movies with these logitech speakers because they sound that bad to me and only because I have a high-end home and car system. I only use it for games and such through the computer.

I mentioned next time that he should move up rather than another lateral move.

His route was

Promedia v2-400 $250?
Logitech z-560 $200?
Logitech z-680 $300?
Klipsch Promedia Ultra $400?
Total = $1150 spent on computer speaker systems over the years

(then z-5500s for his dad $250?)

He said the sound quality of the Promedias was better than the z-5500s but not much, and lacks the digital receiver.

My solution: If he's going to change systems again in the future (which seems like it might be the case based on the history I just read), then rather than getting another $200-$400 system that's going to have some of the same fundamental drawbacks common to these computer speaker systems, I would suggest starting out with a "real" system. He'll have a better upgrade path compared to these all-in-one systems and will be able to get better quality sound (which it appears he's looking for).

He's already spent $1150 over the years on sound systems, so I would suggest next time trying to really do it "right" rather than adding on to the list of systems that were almost lateral moves.

I don't want to get into the wattage ratings on the Logitechs and how they're measured, but yeah, you could replace them with other 8-ohm speakers for the satellites. You don't have the option to change the crossover point though, so it's still going to be limited.

I wasn't going to come in here and suggest anything in particular for a higher cost system, but seeing a guy who has gone through 4-5 computer speaker systems and spent over $1100 on them makes me want to suggest going a different route next time he feels like changing systems.

Can you elaborate on this? I have a pair of klipsch promedia 2.1's which I love but need something cheap for the home theater. is there a way to turn these into 4.1's? (4.2???)
