I'm not sure that I've heard of the Z540's...I know of the older Z560's (I think), which were 4.1...and the Z-640's (which I owned for a year and a half until something in the sub crapped out), which were 5.1. I got the X-530's in replacement from Logitech, and I'm very happy with them. Their specs puts the SNR quite a bit higher than the old Z-640's, and I believe it. Sometimes there was a noticeable hiss with the Z-640's and I think sound wasn't quite as clear as maybe it should have been, but I have no such problems with my X-530's. I'm very happy with them...powerful, clear, basically the best budget 5.1 set that exists, in my opinion. 🙂
Edit: A quick Google search shows that the Z-540's look almost exactly like the Z-640's, just without the center channel. That leads me to believe that their specs and performance are nearly identical (not to mention it looks like the Z-540's are a several-year-old model). I'd recommend the X-530's, no question. You can get them for like $50 these days, which is an awesome value.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the z-640s are just a 5.1 version of the z-540s which is why I mentioned you 🙂

Just as a side question... does the 530 have any protection for the speakers?

Oh...yeah, but it's more of a mesh type thing. You could still get at the cones if you really wanted to (poked really hard 😛), but it's functional enough.

Ah I see... most pics of the 530 that I've seen doesn't go into detail... and plus, having some sort of cover is a requirement for me... I have cousins that stay over... they're 5 and 3. I think I've said enough.
