The Logitech z-2300s are the next step up in Logitech's line and they have been in the ~$60 range from time to time, so $80 sounds like too much to me on the Z-4s.

I think you might be able to get Klipsch Promedias off ebay for around that much.

The Z2300's have muddy bass and lack proper midrange. Personally I would save up a few more dollars and do it right the first time. :) However if the money is burning a hole in your pocket spend $40 on some cheap but decent sounding Logitech X-230's and call it a day.

I have not used the z-4s, but they're probably pretty decent midrange 2.1 computer speakers. I'm just saying that with z-2300s being as cheap as $60 at times, I wouldn't pay $80 for that z-4 set.

The z-4 set looks a lot like the z-3 set with the addision of what looks like two passive radiators in the speakers.

"Good" is relative.

If you have the chance, you could try to demo some different sets. Circuit City has the 230s, Z-4s, and z-2300s online so they might have them in store to demo as well.
They also have the Creative 3800s which would be right in your pricerange too if you bought them online. I have also not heard those, but they look slightly more promising than your average budget creative set.

i have the z-2300's and integrated sound, they sound okay for music (bass is a bit overpowering in anything but rap) and GREAT for games with a lot of explosions and gunshots :p

Chaintech AV-710 would be a good cheap card for a 2.1 system.

~$30 and you can configure it to have very good analog stereo output.

If you're really into gaming you might want to consider something else though.

If you're willing to go through rebates, Newegg has the Creative L3800s (their top of the line 2.1s) for 69.99 AR.

I actually just got a pair and they have great clarity. The treble really is "sparkly" (a good thing) and the bass is not overpowered.

FYI if you want a lot of bass then stick with logitech.

Edit: Jello mentioned this already.
