I got my set when CC cleared them out for $200. I know that Logitech made 500-Watt versions for a long time and continued to use the same packaging and materials that stated "450W RMS". My package (which I have not yet opened) says "450W RMS".

If any of you guys picked up this set from CC, which version of the set was inside the package? Which power rating was printed on the box? What firmware revision does the Control Pod report?

Should I find a place to swap mine?

You know what--I don't know. Some places advertise it as 450 watt "RMS" (example). But then in the specs they state 505 watts total. And if you add up the numbers for all the speakers, you get 505. Perhaps you could refer to your handbook to see if the speaker + subwoofer wattage add up.

I read somewhere that the box ought to say "500 watts" on it. Here is someone's post about it.

I read somewhere else that Logitech upgraded this system to 500 watts but might not have relabelled boxes/manuals.

Excerpt: "Some of us was confused about the 500 watt, because in the manual it says that the set is 450!!! I called the Logitech and had a discussion about that. They told me that they made an upgrade for all Z-680 sets from 450 to 500 watt, but they didn't change the box or the manuals. You can make sure about that with the giving link."

The excerpt is from a post made back in 05/2003. So the above two posts lead me to believe that there are now a mixture of boxes that say "450" and "500", but are actually 500 watt.

i always thought when adding up W - you add up the sattlelites and the sub for the final number

I'm pretty sure that's how you would determine the wattage (assuming that each is rated by RMS, as Logitech does).

The question is this:
Did anyone get 500W sets that were packaged as 450W from CC? If so, then I'll assume that mine are also 500W and open the package.

They're all 500 watt, just some are labeled as 450. Open them and let your ears bleed from the beautiful sounds they will make.

Not true. Logitech says that they updated the set to 500W and that they used to manufacture 450W versions. From what I've heard, most 450W versions and even some 500W versions have an unpleasant hissing sound.

OK, then if they hiss call Logitech and they'll send you new speakers. They are VERY easy to deal with over the phone.

You couldn't be more wrong about that. The only number to reach them for support is a long-distance number in CANADA! You wait on hold for HOURS. Even if they offer to replace the set, you would have to cover shipping. I've had my own problems with their telephone support. They finally agreed to replace a non-functioning USB->PS/2 mouse adapter, and I received a notice in the mail months later saying that the part was out-of-stock and that I would have to call again to reinstate the order! Backordered? Yeah, right! They include that part with every single mouse they make!

Bullsh!t. I had a problem with my Z-640s (crackling satellite) and they sent me a brand new set within a week totally free after a 5 minute wait. Which number did you call? They have a number in the Las Vegas area (702 area code) that I called. Sure it sucks that it's long distance, but use someone's cell phone that has free long distance. I'd rather pay 5 cents a minute for the superb support I got than nothing for an Indian call center.

Reading on Logitech's own User-to-User forums, Logitech always asks Z-680 owners to ship them back...at great cost ($50-$60). Most of the replacements still had the hissing problem, even when disconnected from an audio source. If my set hisses, I'll send them back...but I don't think that Logitech will give me 500W speakers just because I don't want a 450W set. This is why I want to have some idea of what to expect from the set I bought at CC. If they're likely to be 450W (as the packaging says), I'll find another store and do an exchange...

Seriously, will you even notice the difference between 450 and 500W? If they work they work. If you don't want them then take them back to CC for a refund or sell them.
