If I was forced to choose, I'd take the Z-5500s, but then again that would have to be at gun point :)

I have a Samsung HTIB but not that one. It's not too bad for the price, I think it was ~$130, and it's Divx/Xvid playing capability has been impeccable thus far (I'm very disappointed in the highly regarded Philips DVP642). The Logitechs should have much deeper bass...that's been the biggest problem with my HTIB sound-wise.

I don't like the Samsung. For one you don't have a dedicated control unit, and its a "combo" dvd/sound system....that means sound wasn't the primary concern...likely you won't be able to control it as much as the z5500. I have the z5500, and its great, but if you could, as InlineFour said, I would start building your own set. You'll end up with something much better. Granted, it may only be 2.1 for now, but as far as the quality of the sound...it won't even compare. Everyone says the z5500's are perfect on Newegg, but they're far from it. The sub kicks in at ~260 hz which anyone knows is horrible. Get your own sub and receiver and satellites. Have the sub kick in at 100hz, and make sure the satellites are rated to go down to 100hz. Then set the actual turnover rate to 100hz in your receiver, and you'll be a much, much happier listener. Upgrade later as you see fit.

the room is pretty small, say, 10 feet by 10 feet. unfortunately i may never own a real HT system b'coz of my meagre income, plus there's all sorts of bills to pay. i do all my entertainment on the PC, i.e gaming, music & dvds.

you say the Z-5500's sub kicks in at around 260 hz? i thought the manual said that its frequency response in 33hz - 120hz? please clarify as i have a lot to learn. can i control/set the frequency to 100hz per your suggestion from X-fi's THX control panel?
