Logitech Z-5500 not video shielded?

So I got a set of Z-5500's around Xmas this past year, and I used them briefly with my HDTV tuner box from Comcast and my desktop for Dolby Digital playback with DVD's. I moved the next month, and they've been sitting in the box ever since (I've just been lazy). I was about to set them up again when I started to wonder if they're actually video shielded. I could've sworn I read that they are shielded at some point on Logitech's site, but after not seeing any mention online I called tech support just to check. To my surprise, the tech said that Logitech doesn't recommend using them w/CRT's. I had a set of Z-680's before this (got rid of them b/c of the hiss and b/c the sub rattled when connected via analog), and they were video shielded, so I guess I just assumed the Z-5500's are as well (not to mention I thought I read so somewhere).

I have to hand it to Logitech's marketing department. The Z-5500's site states "Connect to multiple sources: Simultaneously connect 6 audio sources including PCs, video game consoles, and DVD, CD & portable music players? and control it all from the Digital SoundTouch? Control Center." Why they would fail to mention that this should only be used with non-CRT displays, I'll never know. I guess I'll have to get rid of these as well. Just thought I'd let any prospective buyers and current owners know if you didn't already.

Have you tried them with a CRT already?

Even in a worst case scenario, you'd just have to make a little separation between the monitor and the center.

Yes, I used them with my 30" widescreen CRT HDTV. I didn't notice any warping, but I didn't use them for very long. I'm more concerned about the long term effects of the magnetic fields generated by these puppies.

Those speakers are so small that they wouldn't have much of a magnetic field. I wouldn't worry about it.

I think the Tech was miss informing you as I beleive they are Mag shielded. Amazon states they are and Logi states the center channel (which all the Sats are Alumi) can be placed above or below the CRT.

I just called again today asking about the speaker stands connected to the satellites in the demo video on the Z-5500's Web site, and the tech this time told me the satellites are shielded but the sub (of course) is not. WTF?

The sub usually sits on the floor, a good meter or so from any computer screens. A magnetic field generated by a sub isn't gonna warp a screen 1m away.

Also, _slight_ warping over time isn't a big deal. That's what the deguass button on your monitor is for.

Or find someone with a degaussing wand if it gets bad. Those things are amazing. For christmas I got one of those battery-less torches, which are power by shaking a rare-earth magnet up and down inside them (farady effect I think). Anyway, I accidentally left the torch sitting on top of my TV for two days. Next time I turned my TV on, the whole top was purple and green!! Anyway, I went down to Jaycar (I guess it's sort of like an Australian RadioShack) and picked up a deguassing wand for AU$40 (US$30). It fixed my screen in about 10 seconds. You cant even see the difference.

Anyways, I wouldn't get rid of perfectly good speakers because the sub isn't magnetically shielded. I dont think many subs are.
