ok now i know the z-5500's have more wattage, bigger sub, and dts encoding. But for someone who already has a audigy 2 zs to do the encoding, is it really worth it to get the z-5500's? I mean since anyone living in an apt wont be able to blast them anyways. So lets say at decent gaming/movie levels is there much difference in audio quality? no stores around me in vegas have a display of the z-5500's so i cant test em out. I just dont see the point in spending $150 extra if its only for "MORE POWER". Any other 5.1 recommendations are welcome and yes i know Klipsch pwns but thats $350.

I have a pair of z5500s and they are nice, but I'm addicted to power. From what I have heard the z5500 sats are better sounding than the z5300s, and the larger sub throws tighter bass. However, the z5300s are probably the best set of 5.1s out there in that price range.

I'd say for the price the klipsch doesn't pwn anything. They are a killer system, but dont sound any better than the z5500s. I have plenty of experience wiith both sets. The z5500s have some better features...

I'd go with the z5300s as they are plenty powerful for most rooms.

id be willing to spend the extra if theres a noticeable sound quality. Besides the sub, hows the sat difference?

How high of a volume will you be using them at... and how large of a room will you need to fill. You'll probably notice that the z5500s have better sounding sats at higher volumes due to their larger drivers and higher power handeling. The z5300s will sound fine for gaming, watching DVDs on the computer, but if you want to fill a larger room with sound you'll probably want the z5500s.

Honestly unless you need the extra power to fill a larger room, you probably will be plenty happy with the z5300s.

ya i went and ordered the 5300's. i was thinking the same thing as you mentioned. the z5500 can handle more but its like having a ferrari in new york. if you cant use the full potential...then you just paid double for looks and the ability to say you drive a ferrari.

I think you made a very good choice. I don't have much personal experience with the z5300s but all the reviews that I have read puts them right on top of that price segment. I have heard them play plenty of times, but it's always in-store demos, never at a friends place or anything like that. The set of z5500s that I have now is my second set of logitech speakers (had the z560s for a few years and loved them too... just felt the need to upgrade to 5.1 from 4.1). Quality wise I've always been impressed, I think you'll have fun with them. Besides they are 280watts RMS, it's not like they aren't powerful. I'm sure you can piss off plenty of people with them if you want to...

Sorry to bump this thread, but I plan on getting a set of 5.1 speakers and I'm torn between these two. My computer gaming room is actually a small walk-in closet that is about 5ft wide by 8ft long by 8ft tall. Would it be worth the extra money for the 5500's?

nope. i got my 5300's setup and they sound real nice. i live by myself in my apt and these babies are plenty loud for my apt. your walk-in closet wont use 1/4 of these babies power. get the 5300's...the 5500's would be overkill.

"true" 5.1 requires decoding and i dont believe onboard will do that for you. i believe that requires an sound card or something like the 5500's. It may play all five speakers but as far as specific 5.1 channels for games, movies, etc i dont believe so. but my experience with onboard is less than most.
