Logitech wireless mouse doesn't work?

My parents' new Dell 4300 has the Logitech wireless mouse and keyboard option. Both have worked great, but since they're wireless they run on batteries. The mouse batteries went dead. Kaput. No signal at all. Sounds simple enough to fix, right? Just put in new batteries? Well, I put in new batteries, hit the 'connect' button on the reciever, hit the 'connect' button on the mouse, and nothing happens. The mouse cursor won't move, the buttons won't respond. The keyboard works fine, so I don't think the reciever is broken. I've tried plugging in plain two-button PS2 cord mouse and that works fine. Any ideas?

Does the bottom of mouse lightup when computer is powered up? Might have to hit connect button on both mouse and keyboard.

Make sure you put fresh batteries in. Also hit the connect/receive buttons a couple of times. I have the same mouse and it is finicky.

Already swapped out fresh batteries, twice. Hit the connect button at least a half-dozen times. No dice.

Did the mouse die slowly or all at once? Mine always starts getting jerky and freezing as the batteries run down. If your parents mouse died all at once, I would suspect something else.

Dead. Kaput. Game over. ^_^;;; I've got a plain two-button no-wheel PS/2 mouse plugged in right now, so it's not like they're totally out of business...

I know this will sound wierd but our CFO has a Dimension 8100 with the Logitech Wireless Keyboard and Mouse.
Same issue as your are having, new batteries etc etc...nothing worked.

A reinstall of the latest drivers from the Logitech website brought it back to life, it seemed as though Win2k lost the hardware it would show up as not initialized "HID compliant device"

Give a reinstall a whirl!

Basically that's what I was going to suggest. Uninstall then reinstall the mouse. Make sure to remove it from device manager.

Reinstalling the mouse drivers, huh? I'll give it a shot and tell you what happens.

That did the trick... kind of. It's wierd. I tried un-installing the mouse then reinstalling it with the updated drivers from Logitech. That didn't work. Then I let WinXP auto-detect it and install it's own drivers. Didn't work. I went to Add/Remove Programs, uninstalled MouseWare (Logitech's mouse software), rebooted, and then it worked. One would think that by uninstalling MouseWare that the mouse wouldn't even be recognized... go figure. Thanks for the help!

It is wierd, but since i just got done fighting this battle with our CFO's Dimension i fugred it might be the same thing.
Wierd as heck!
One thing is if you decide to install the lates driver for the keyboard or make a change to the mouse drivers in the future, it will break again and you will need to do what you did this time to get it to work again...plain old screwy eh? :)

Then in that case the trick is to NOT update drivers so long as it's working fine, I guess. I follow that own philosophy on my computer. Don't fix it if it ain't broke.
