Logitech SetPoint puts 3 entries in msconfig

I have a Logitech G5 mouse and after installing the SetPoint 3.0 software/drivers from Logitech's website, I end up with 3 new msconfig entries. I can live with (and expect) 1, but not 3.

First of all, there are 2 entries calling the KHALMNPR.EXE file. I understand what the file does (kernel hardware and abstraction layer) and am fine with it running as I want to use the features of SetPoint.

First call to this file in msconfig:
C:\program files\Common Files\Logitech\khalshared\KHALMNPR.exe

Second call to this file in msconfig:
KHALMNPR.EXE

The second call has no path information listed. In the registry it just says "Kernel and Hardware Abstraction Layer" in the name field, and "KHALMNPR.EXE" in the data field.

After Windows loads, I only see one instance of KHALMNPR.EXE loaded in Task Manager. Do I need both of these? Which one can I delete?

Lastly, I have a blank entry in msconfig as well. I've read ALL about removing these but trust me, there is NOTHING in the registry pointing to this blank entry. I cannot find the entry anywhere even though msconfig shows the registry location to be the standard "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run" location.

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks.

I recommend you just unistall it. A 40mb download and 3 msconfig entries for a fvckin mouse driver is just plain ridiculous. The mouse will work fine without it.

I agree, but I really love using the custom mapping on the various mouse buttons. So I'm stuck with the driver in order to do that.

I tend to agree on huge driver downloads, but Logitech's are actually pretty good. Without them you aren't getting the full potential out of your mouse. The custom mappings is great, as is the sensitivity settings come in handy. Logitech could stand to re-write the drivers and make them much smaller, but seeing how they are lazy bastards who release driver updates about as often as Creative, that won't happen :)

But maybe if they do Vista Setipoint drivers they will be compact, haha I can dream (sigh*

Are you running the SetPoint drivers yourself? (You seem familiar with them at least). If so, do you have the KHALMNPR.EXE file listed twice in your msconfig startup and registry? Thanks for the feedback, I agree that the drivers are quite large. Of course, 2gb of RAM certainly helps overcome that. But, as you said, I really like the features especially making custom mappings for different executables, etc.

Not at home to check, will do that tomorrow and let you know. I don't see why the same file should be in there twice, unless it'd loading will massivly different switches? I will check though

I have an MX518 and don't like the Setpoint drivers either, especially as it doesn't let you set button profiles for individual games. It's rather ridiculous that a 40MB driver doesn't have any capability to do something this simple, and the third party Logigamer utility doesn't appear to support the MX518. I wish they would take a hint from their own G15 keyboard drivers, which are both smaller and have an excellent profile system.

Hmm, I don't have any problem setting various button configurations on my G5 using the SetPoint drivers. But I also don't use the 'Advanced Gaming' section of the utility. On the initial SetPoint control panel window, there's a dropdown that let's you select an executable file and assign button profiles for it. You can add an executable using the 'Manage Programs' button belows the dropdown.

I currently am doing this successfully with Oblivion, and some other Windows programs. All in all I currently have 4 profiles and they work without a problem. Just be careful when switching back and forth between the programs to make changes, I always seem to mess this up accidentally.

I looked at some reviews and apparently that menu only appears for the newer Logitech mice, not the MX518. I actually got the MX518 over the G5 mainly for its extra buttons, but I can't use them without setting them every time I load up the game. :p

Good tip. I uninstalled mine this morning. A 47 meg download for a mouse driver is silly.

Yes, there are two separate entries for KHALMNPR.EXE

But if you check the task manager, only one instance of the .exe is running.

Ok, good to know it's not just me with this configuration. I guess I'm wondering, though, can I remove one of the entries? It doesn't seem to make sense to need two of them.
