Logitech PS3 Adapter Issues

There was a thread recently about upgrading from a PS3 fat to slim that I accidentally hijacked by bringing up Logitech PS3 Adapter issues. There was so much of a response to it that I've been meaning to create a whole new thread to see just how many people are affected by this frustrating problem.

The issue with the Logitech PS3 Adapter is the fact that if you power on your PS3 with the Logitech PS3 Adapter, no PS3 game controller can connect/enumerate to the PS3. If you turned your PS3 on by a game controller, the game controller will get disconnected if you use the Logitech PS3 Adapter to do anything.

I had initially thought it was a problem with the adapter and older BC capable PS3's. I bought a PS3 Slim to test this theory out, and the issue is even more pronounced in the PS3 Slim.

For the past few months ever since launch, Logitech has been giving all sorts of excuses. First they said it was interference and to move the adapter as far away as possible. This is kind of a problem when the adapter needs the same line of sight as all your other components. After that I saw Logitech blaming the problem on Sony for changing the Bluetooth protocol in version 3.0 of the software. This would have been viable if I hadn't been having problems since 2.8 and before!

The good news is Logitech has finally decided to admit fault and will RMA PS3 adapters with certain serial numbers. Great news, right? The only problem is that they're asking us to foot the bill for return shipping of the adapters. How is it fair for us to have to pay to replace a defective product that should have been working in the first place?

How many other people have this issue, and how many of you are pissed about the way Logitech is handling this? I have been a very loyal Logitech fan buying many mice, keyboards, speakers, and remotes from them, but after this fiasco I am just about fed up. I do not think they deserve my business anymore.

I had the exact opposite experience with Logitech. I stepped on my out of warranty Logitech 360 remote and messed up the screen. I asked if there was any chance they would RMA it anyways and they said no but would send me a replacement free-of-charge.

Yeah, as the OP knows, my experience is the same as Rage187's. I too had the faulty PS3 adapter and they shipped me a replacement via 2nd day air without having me ship the faulty unit back. I had a new unit in my hands 4 days after I made my initial post in the Logitech forums. I have no idea why Syborg1211 is having a different scenario play out.

I never took part in the discussion of the subject previously, but since then I've been playing more attention to the PS3 Harmony Adapter and my remote's interactions.
I have zero complaints. My PS3 turns on and off when I want, can access buttons that are on the touch screen, all buttons work when browsing system menus or playing blu-ray movies. It feels like I'm simply using a controller for it, like I want.

And oddly enough, I can point my remote almost anywhere and the IR signals somehow find their way to the adapter, which currently is placed near the PS3. So I can pretend it's still a BT remote and doesn't need to be aimed, which is nice. The IR signals must be very strong and bouncing off of everything.

edit:

re-read your post more thoroughly, and saw about the controller connection troubles.
I haven't had those. Every now and then I've had a time when a controller wouldn't connect, but it wasn't the adapter, as I didn't have the adapter when that happened. I think it happened once when I did have the adapter, and it was the first or second day of having the adapter connected. But every time I use the remote to power on, and if I am playing a game I then turn on my PS3 controller. Get's control slot #1 with no problems, and functions just fine. And the remote will turn off the PS3 when turning components off.
Every now and then it won't turn something off, so I just press help on the remote.

Well, my replacement Harmony PS3 Adapter is now screwed up too. Ever since the PS3 v3.10 firmware update the Harmony Adapter does not work properly. Now every single time I turn on my PS3 with my Harmony the PS3 refuses to connect to any Bluetooth device, including the Harmony PS3 Adapter.

The PS3 responds to the first command that turns it on, but that's it. After that the adapter no longer works nor do any of the controllers. This happens every single time I turn the PS3 on with the Harmony. If I turn the PS3 on with the power button on the machine or with a PS3 controller everything works perfectly, including the Harmony. So it is definitely a problem being caused by the Harmony Adapter.

Anyone else having this issue?

Have you gone to any of the Logitech forums to see if this is a widespread problem? Sounds like the update might have borked it.

Is there a better, cheaper method to connect the Harmony One to the PS3?

Dari - There are a few other options, all much less refined than the Logitech adapter, but all much more reliable lol. Search for IR2BT, PS3IR, PS3Toothfairy, or IR4PS3.

Here's an update to my original issue - I finally was able to get Logitech to pay for return shipping, and they sent me a replacement unit as soon as they received my old one. The new one does not cause bluetooth issues, but it doesn't always turn off my PS3. I don't know about anyone else, but I really get annoyed when i walk by my entertainment center and the PS3 is running 30 minutes after I powered everything down. I have unhooked the Logitech PS3 Adapter, and my life is so much simpler now than before (albeit with 2 total remote controls for watching movies now).

After years of being a loyal Logitech customer, I have a majorly sour taste in my mouth from this terrible experience with a terrible product with terrible firmware. Who makes a product without the ability to flash the firmware these days?

Well, much as I hate to say it, Sony is the one I'd spend my time blaming. They did their best to make remote controls annoying to use with the PS3...
