Logitech Optical Mouse with Erratic Pointer

This mouse is driving me crazy. The pointer has a case of the major jitters. Someone told me that shinny surfaces would cause this, so I'm using a piece of black construction paper. Also tried Logitech's latest drivers and still the pointer jumps. Any ideas on what the problem is? Here are my system specs...

- Asus P3V4X Motherboard, VIA 133a chipset (BIOS 1005)
- P3-550E @ 733MHz SECC2 Coppermine Processor
- Golden Orb Slot-1 CPU Cooler
- Micron PC133, CAS2, 128MB DIMM
- Asus V6800 Pure, GeForce 32MB DDR AGP Display Adapter
- 3Com EthierLink 10Mbps PCI TPO NIC
- D-Link DFE-538TX 10/100Mbps NIC
- SB Live Value Sound Card
- Cambridge Digital SoundWorks Speakers
- HP CD-Writer+ 8200
- Maxtor DiamondMax Plus-40 30Gig DMA/66 HDD
- Acer Aopen HX-45 ATX Case
- Sunon Double Ball Bearing front Case Fan (3 Pin, 3500rpm, 36cfm)
- Antec ATX PP303X 300W Power Supply
- Microsoft SideWinder Precision Pro USB Joystick
- Microsoft Natural Keyboard Elite (PS/2)
- Logitech Optical Wheel Mouse - USB (PS/2)

Nvidia's 6.34 Detonator3 Drivers with VIA's 4.03 AGP driver.
4x AGP, fast writes, side band addressing - all enabled.

TIA, Mike

How about returning it? Is Logitech good about RMA's. I noticed that their site was very slow and they had skimpy tech support.

Please... any advice.

I also get erratic movement from my mouse pointer. I posted about this a month or 2 ago and several people had the same problem. I went through Logitechs support system and frankly, I have had better results from the guy behind the counter at Best Buy (read: None).

I currently use the sUrface1030 from funC industries. I have had less erratic movement from this pad than anything else I have tried, but I still get some. always when it is motionless. It just sits and jitters until I reposition it.

I still use it because I still feel it is smoother overall than my previous mouseman. We can't be the only ones that have this problem. I guarantee you that Logitech is aware of this problem. We can only hope it is something that can be fixed in software and eventually they will release some updated drivers. It's too bad they have no real tech support because, though I like their designs the best, I definately will look at the competition for my next mouse.

Nemi, I've also noticed that Logitech now sells this mouse with a sticker on the box that reads... "New Second Generation Optical Sensor". Either this is a marketing ploy or they have modified it because of such a problem. Also, I've tried different mousing surfaces to varying degrees of success in moderating the jitter effect. I have also come to the conclusion that it may be an interference problem because it seems to mysteriously come and go.

Thanks, at least I know I'm not alone. Mike

mabe there's something u can change in the MouseWare thing that came with it? i dunno, mines awesome. no prob's at all

I have the exact same problem.. The only way i could combat that, was yanking it out of usb mode and putting it back into PS/2 port.

I think im going to contact Logi on this.. I think its wrong not to accept a RMA for a mistake on their part. If they do have a 2nd generation OPTICAL sensor, it would be smart if they allowed FIRST generation owners the same luxury.
