Can I use this mouse if I already have a Logitech Freedom Optical Desktop? I'd like to replace the older Cordless Optical Mouseman that came with the desktop with this mouse. My guess is that I would have to use the IR pod that came with the MX700, correct?

It's also cordless... but if that's not important to you then I guess that's not an improvement. Also, instead of using IR, the mx700 uses RF signals, which means there's no longer any need for line of sight from mouse to sensor. I have yet to use the mx700, but am very tempted to give one a try because of this one feature. Also, RF should exhibit less lag in movement than IR, if any at all.

I've had the MX700 for nearly 3 weeks now, and I've been nothing but pleased. Very comfortable, no lag (I believe it takes as many pictures per second as any corded USB mouse), rechargable batteries (which charge very quickly. Just set it in it's cradle for 15 minutes, and it's good to go for 6 hours of gaming) and it's visual appeal is unmatched. My only hesitations towards recommending it would be due to the weight (due to the batteries), the 2 thumb buttons are a bit small (but still reachable) and the optic sensor lies directly below your index finger. All of these things are no longer a problem once you adjust. Your aim might be a little off or slow for a while in any FPS, but I believe it's well worth it. If you want a lighter mouse with the traditional optic sensor location, and don't mind the cord, then go with the MX500.

Is there a wireless keyboard that works with this receiver, or another receiver, and that is fast enough for gaming? This seems nice but it would be nice to have a wireless keyboard as well, and if I can't switch to backpedaling or strafing quickly enough then it won't do for FPSguy.

Yes, you can use the MX700 with the Cordless Freedom keyboards, but you will have to have both of the receivers plugged in. The keyboard uses the ps/2 keyboard port though, so you don't lose an extra USB port. As someone mentioned, the MX mice use different wireless technology, so the signals don't interfere. Since Logitech is moving almost all of their desktop input devices to wireless, I'm sure they had the foresight to ensure the signals don't interfere (different radio frequencies). Its noted in the manual that the RF for the MX700 is much lower than 900mhz and 2.4ghz phones as not to interfere. Logitech should really package this mouse with a wireless keyboard and consolidate the receiver unit.

The MX optical engine is the best available and easily surpasses dual opticals at 800dpi. B/c of the RF and USB interface, there is no lag at all. I'm a hardcore gamer, and I can honestly say this mouse compromises nothing. People complain about the mouseware, but there's no point in even installing it. I have full button functionality in windows as well as games (where buttons are programmable). If you insist on installing the drivers and adding overhead to your system, the latest 9.75 drivers have reportedly fixed any game issue with this mouse.

Its a steal at $38....if you don't get one you'll regret it later.

I was under the impression that with the default Windows mouse drivers, you're only taking advtange of 400 DPI. You need the Logitech drivers to be running at 800 DPI, but you can manually install the drivers off the CD without installing MouseWare.

The keyboard uses the ps/2 keyboard port though, so you don't lose an extra USB port. As someone mentioned, the MX mice use different wireless technology, so the signals don't interfere.

Thanks for your info. The Keyboard and mouse from the Freedom Optical Desktop come with USB connectors, but they also include PS/2 adapters in the box. That's the way I have mine configured. No sense in filling up USB ports when you have your PS/2 sitting empty.

That being said, do you think I can use a PS/2 adapter with the MX700 or will I have to use a USB port? I don't mind having both receivers. The Freedom Optical receiver is behind my monitor and the receiver for the MX700 looks like a recharger stand, so I don't mind having that on my desk either.

Also.. How is the recharger stand powered? Do I have to have it plugged into the wall or does the power from it being plugged into the pc charge it?

Np, actually, I wouldn't use the PS/2 adapter for the MX700 if you can spare a USB port. It does come with a PS/2 Adapter, but I think I read somewhere that the MX engine can actually take advantage of the extra USB bandwidth (40hz compared to ~120hz).

You may have a newer Freedom Optical set, but my receiver came with 2 outputs dongles, 1 USB and 1 PS/2. The USB only controls the mouse for me, the keyboard is PS/2 only. I thought at first that the USB could control both, but I don't think it worked when I tried it (about a year ago). Of course the USB can use the PS/2 adapter as well.

As for the charger base, it definitely does not clutter your desk as it has a very small footprint (coffee mug) and is very stylish. It does require an AC adapter, but the way its implemented is quite excellent, and again, minimizes desk clutter. The AC adapter actually plugs into the USB connector through a mini-jack and is totally hidden from view. So basically, you only have one wire running up to your charger base instead of 1 for the USB connection and 1 for the AC adapter. The build quality of the mouse is extraordinary in every way. Its not just an excellent performer, it definitely gets a 10 in "cool factor" as well. There's a totally inconspicuous LED below the scroll wheel that indicates power/charging status, and the recharge time rivals any NiMH quick charger on the market.

For $38 bucks, can't beat this deal, I'm considering whether or not to get one for work at this price.

For all those worried about drivers: Simply don't use them. Configure it as a default intellimouse compatible USB mouse. The wheel works perfectly when you do that, and I think(not sure on this) that the side buttons work fine too. The buttons above and below the wheel lose functionality, but they weren't(for many people, at least) very useful before, anyway.
