Logitech MX610 Mice

I bought one of these mice at the beginning of August to use on my x64 system. However, after fiddling with it for weeks, I could never get it to work properly. I tried the 2.42A driver that came with the mouse and 2.47, 2.60 and 3.01. Whatever I did, the cursor movement was erratic and unusable. The same was true on both XP and SuSe 10.0.

Finally, I contacted Logitech for an RMA, which I received today, but this mouse is like the last...only worse, because it won't even budge the cursor, unless I use a piece of white paper for a pad. With the paper, it works as it should, but a laser mouse is supposed to be less picky than an optical mouse, but my old Cordless Click mouse works fine, even though I have just about worn it out.

I sent another email to Logitech today, but that didn't get me anywhere before, so I'm hoping that someone here can help.

laser mice are really horrible about surfaces, despite claims...

i use mine on a solid grey mousepad, works well... anything else, nope

I normally just use my pantleg, which works great with my optical mouse. The only reason that I can see for paying the outrageous price of a laser mouse, is that they specifically claim that it has much superior surface detection.

I got a response to my email a while ago, and they want me to call them again, for some "in depth troubleshooting". That would be a good idea, if there was any point. I have already called them several times, only to get the RMA. If it continued in this vein, I would only be wasting more money on long distance calls. Maybe that is why Logitech charges so much for these mice, just to cover the cost of shipping out new mice without further charges. If this is what I can expect, I'm going to trash this mouse, and buy a air gyro mouse. I'm wondering if anyone here has used one of these and knows how well they work? I would hate repeating an experience such as this.

I just got off the phone with support, and they could offer no suggestions on how to fix this problem. When I insisted on a refund of the purchase price, the tech spoke with his supervisor, and they informed me that since the mouse worked on a piece of white paper, they would not refund my money. The only defense that they came up with is that they didn't advertise that it would work on any surface, to which I retorted that they didn't advertise that it would only work on a piece of white paper either. The tech understood and agreed with me, but obviously, he could only do what his company allowed him to do. I asked for an email address to someone higher than the tech support department, and he refused to give me one. I advised him that I am very active in the forums, and that I would do my best to make sure that enough people knew about this, that it would cost Logitech alot more than they had cost me. At that, he put me on hold, to attempt to get someone else on the phone, but apparently no one was around, so he said that they would call within a couple of days.

I also had just as bad of an experience with their rebate department, because they "conveniently" lost my rebate forms, and asked me to send them copies of the sales receipt, rebate form and UPC. I have copies of everything, except unfortunately the UPC, so I'm out of luck there also.

My conclusion is, don't buy anything from Logitech that you might expect them to support properly if it doesn't work.

Since installing MCE, I've got this mouse working...sort of. At least it usually will respond to the point that is is usable, but it still tends to dance, and occassionally take off soaring across the screen into another world. I reset the polling rate to 500 MHz, but that changed nothing. Is there any other settings that I might try to improve this?

I've RMA'ed several items to Logitech over the years and have been utterly pleased with their service. I also use my cell phone in order to avoid a long distance charge on my LAN line. I recently called them because the MX700 mouse in a MX Duo combo was acting funny. After I relayed all of the troubleshooting steps I had performed the tech issued an RMA and said I would receive a replacement MX Duo kit. Less than one week later I received a retail boxed MX 3200 cordless desktop laser kit. Needless to say I was excited. 🙂

In regards to your MX610, the MX 3200 kit came with a MX600 mouse and it works like a champ on any colored surface. My fiancee uses a small 3M blue/white mousing surface, but it also works fine on the light brown laminate on her desk.

My advice to you since you have an issue with that particular mouse is to try it on another computer to see if it still exhibits erratic movement. It's not necessary to load any software for the mouse to function on a modern OS.

The mouse that I'm using is an RMA. I went in circles with Logitech so much, trying to get it to work on x64, that I would rather throw it in the trash, than try to talk to them again. I do not have access to another computer, so if I can't make this one work better, I shall simply go back to my Cordless Click. The only problem that it has ever had is a broken battery door that I have to tape shut.

Instead of trashing the MX610 post it in the FS/T forum and offer it to someone for the cost of shipping.
