I went from the original Logi Optical Wheel Mouse -> Dual Optical (replaced LED's with brighter blue and green ones and it actually tracked even better :D) -> MX700 and I have an MX510 with a secondary machine. The MX700 is my favorite for light gaming and around Windows stuff, but it took a lot of T&E as well as RMA's to get it to work right as far as location for the receiver and mousepads go. As noted, it is the heaviest mouse I've ever used by far. Most people will tell you that you will get used to it and to "grow muscles and stop being a whimp" but the weight is still an issue for flickshots with fast action such as in Q3. So for serious gaming, the MX510 is my favorite, and I removed the weight inside of it to make it even lighter. It is paper light now and tracks beautifully. I would suggest trying the MX510 on for size with the PS2 adapter with it set to 200Hz sampling (a.k.a. polling) rate as I notice a small but distinct lag between the time I hit a mouse button and when it registers on screen using USB. CPU utilization with PS2@200Hz is negligible, but it does take up an IRQ which may or may not be an issue for you. As far as the wheel mouse compares with the MX510, there is no contest in the least. It would definitely be worth the pricetag if gaming is important to you (which it is from the sounds of it :)). Good luck

Is this true? If it isnt then i think i can cope with my MS mouse for a little bit more.
Yes, the 12-bit controller is utilized with the 9.80 drivers installed whereas without it, it only functions at 8-bit which is what the original MX series sensor uses IIRC. Also check the reg branch HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lmouflt2\Parameters\<mouse here>\0000 to see if "Resolution" is set to 8.

I've noticed the quotes insert HTML too...

Whoever said that thing about the 'memory effect', have you actually had any experience with this little phenomena?? Because it is very well documented and what you are saying isn't quite right and you probably shouldn't spread all this fear about NiCad around.
