Logitech G9 gaming mouse

I just got it in the mail today. Do I need to install the software to take full advantage of the mouse? If I don't, do I miss anything special? Like change the sensitivity on the fly?

Yeah, you need setpoint. It lets you bind all them fancy schmancy buttons to something. I'm rocking a little older model (MX1000) but I still love it. When I play shooters I have a bunch of ancillary functions (reload, use, etc) bound to mouse buttons, saving precious keyboard bindings for other stuff.

In the case of the G5, if you don't install the software, you can still change DPI on-the-fly, but it is limited to the three default DPI settings. So if you want to change what those values are, and have up to 5 levels, you'll need to install Setpoint. Also would need Setpoint to customize buttons to specific functions and use profiles.

But Setpoint is a huge bloat, and that's being nice. You can find all of the older versions released. I use 3.1.

For some reason I have trouble with setpoint locking up my machine at bootup when it's part of the startup. So I just stick with the defaults and run my G5 at maximum DPI and bump down the sensitivity. If I want to cruise by using the left/right scrollwheen I execute setpoint after the machine is booted up.

Uh, according to my task manager, setpoint is eating up a whopping 6MB of RAM.

On a 2GB machine (which is getting to the low end these days), I'm willing to make the sacrifice.

Could you expound on huge bloat? I don't even notice it.

The reason to install it is to change the DPI settings. Default is only 4, and you can add another one with Setpoint. You can also change the color of the LED, bind the buttons, and set the USB report rate. After that, you don't need it at all.
