Logitech recently announced the G9 mouse. Check it out here .

And I literally JUST bought the updated G5 the other day. On the G9, I like the idea of switching out the grips. It looks like they're completely made out of that nice rubberized material. The scroll wheel is like the Microgear on the MX Revolution. You can switch between click to click and "frictionless" scroll. 3200 dpi seems insane. I'm just now starting to get used to 2000 dpi. It also lets you change the colors of the LED display. You could use different colors for different profiles, for example.

What do you think of the G9? I think it's odd looking, but I'd certainly like to get my hands -- er, a hand on it.

That looks a little boxy compared to Logitech's recent models. Depending on its actual size, that could be difficult to use comfortably. It does have different grips for finger mousing so it's likely not too large. At least they made sure to have two thumb buttons (would have loved three like there are on the MX1000 I still use) unlike the initial G5/G7 releases.

I'm still waiting for a mouse with more than 8 customizable buttons like my mx510 :(

I agree that the MX510 was an excellent mouse. I have a G5 now--love the ability to change res on the fly, but I hate the damn wheel control.

The G9 and G5 rev 2 have 9 customizable buttons. Just install Uberoptions and all buttons can be customized.

The G9 is intriguing, spec-wise, but two things turn me off:

1) the price
2) the looks.

Hopefully, the introduction of this mouse will push the G5 rev2 price lower... just hopefully...

9? I didnt see that many.... aren't 2 of those buttons stuck to changing the dpi settings though?

BTW - any reviews of the uberoptions software? It looks like it might make the Revolution a viable gaming mouse!

2 thumb, 2 dpi, 2 mouse, wheel button, 2 tilt wheel buttons. Uberoptions and the latest SetPoint software allows you to customize all of the buttons including dpi.

Don't know of any reviews of uberoptions but it gives you even more freedom than Setpoint.

Last week, I bought the new G5 with the 2 thumb buttons. Setpoint 4 lets me set any of the buttons, including the dpi increase and decrease buttons, to anything I want. Also, the forward/back buttons work fine for me in Firefox. Uberoptions seems unnecessary for me. So far, only STEAM/HL2 seemed to have an issue with the mouse: my in-between dpi settings weren't recognized. I believe I can simply add STEAM to the game list in Setpoint to fix that.

I'd imagine the latest version of Setpoint would allow all of the G9's buttons to be customized, too.

Most Razer mice let you customize the whole mouse control, so scrolling up can be clicking. I have it double mapped for the dualies in cs.

My problen is that i need more buttons than any of their mice offer - i have only one working arm so i control using mouse buttons only.

I get about a 1:1 kill ratio still though :D (usuallu)

You need to get a Nostromo N52.

First off I'd like to know a few things...

Is the 3200 dpi laser sensor 3200 hardware dpi or is there software interpolation in there? Either way, 3200dpi really does seem to be overkill unless you're running on one of those 30" LCDs, but even then... Is it a newer generation laser sensor that fixes the many inadequacies of those that exist now?

I'd much rather the mouse have a solid sensor like the new Razer mice (DeathAdder, and the up and coming Diamondback 3G and Boomslang CE 2007) than some insane dpi that is going to be all but unusable for 99% of users.

Of course if it is a newer generation laser that doesn't have the glaring weaknesses the "upto" 3200dpi would only be all the better to have that option should you choose to use it.

Belkin may discontinue the n52...they have told several of that there will be no Vista drivers, however, there are some beta ones out, so there may be conflicting information. I have moved over to an Ideazon Fang. It's not quite as hand-friendly but I'm getting better at it. Much better software.

Will the G9 have a better sensor and value then MX518 (or the Razor Deathadder)? The G5 didn't.

That is purely opinion, so nobody can answer that for you. What do you mean better sensor? The G5 had a much higher sensitivity than the mx518 was capable of.

it isn't completely opinion, tests measuring tracking speed of various mice show the older optical mice destroy laser based mice when considering fast mouse movements.

Although this concerns low sensitivity players far more than higher sensitivity users, it is still a valid point. If this laser based G9 loses tracking or skips or has acceleration problems when moving at high speeds then it really isn't going to be any better than cheap optical mice that have been on the market forever, no matter what extra bells and whistles it comes with.

This is why Razer's 3 newest mice have (or are going to have) gone away from the laser and back use an LED optical infrared sensor. At 1800dpi it is nearly half that of this new 3200dpi G9, but as was said before, unless this is a newer generation laser that fixes the inadequacies of older laser based mice, well then it really isn't going to be worth it.
