Logitech G500 acting odd. Any troubleshooting tips?

For the last few months, my mouse hasn't been tracking properly. Sometimes the cursor will get stuck on a diagonal axis until I either move it around randomly or pick it up and set it back down. Occasionally, it will double left and right click while playing games, so I'm assuming it's just dying, though I've never had this issue with any Logitech mice and I've been using them since 2005.

I don't use a mousepad and instead just keep it on my wood desk. At first I thought that was the issue until I tried a solid matte mousepad and had the same issue. I can't seem to replicate this and it seems that blowing air into the eye (or just picking it up) fixes the issue.

Any ideas on what's causing this, possible troubleshooting tips, and/or recommendations on a new gaming mouse? I absolutely loved my old MX510 and it still works great today, but I wasn't able to alter the DPI with that mouse and certain games took some adjustment before I was able to play without issue.

I don't know about the double clicking, but I've had the tracking issue where it moves very slowly or diagonally, or diagonally and slowly.

I tracked it down to some very, very fine hair(s) getting trapped in the cavity where the laser is. They wiggle around occasionally and interfere with the laser tracking, but shaking or blowing on the mouse moves them back out of the way.

If you do a thorough inspection, you might find one or more very fine hairs in there to the side. It fixed my G500 right up (That I got to replace a G5 that had the same issue, I wish I realized what it was before then since the mouse was perfectly fine besides that).

Single click randomly registering as double is probably the switch starting to die. Could try wiping and reinstalling all mouse software and drivers, and maybe reinstalling your USB controllers if you think it could be software related, but I would bet it's the mouse hardware. My 6-year old G500 started this a couple months ago, hadn't been using as my main mouse though for a while so wasn't personally a big loss. The MX518 I had before the G500 did the same thing. Only the left mouse button each time, so I feel confident it's the switch wearing out.

Like anything mechanical, mice do eventually wear out. If cleaning, etc., doesn't solve the issue, it is probably time to replace. Gamers are often hard on mice. :)

Thanks for the information. I ended up cleaning it thoroughly and I found quite a bit of hair trapped near the laser eye. Haven't had an issue with the diagonal/stuck cursor since I cleaned it, but if it actually fixed the issue remains to be seen. As for the double click, it's definitely a mechanical issue since I already wiped the drivers once before posting here. Having played Dungeon Defenders for a solid 1,500 hours on this mouse, it has seen some wear and tear since I don't use autoclickers and upgrading 400^ items takes 400+ clicks.

Thanks again.
