Logitech G5 or MX518?

I'm using an MX700 right now, but decided I wanted to try out a wired mouse. Aside from the annoying removal of buttons on the G5, people also seem to be having problems with tracking on a variety of dark and/or textured mouse pads (or just when moving the mouse really fast.)

Are these real issues? Or are most people having a fine time with their G5? The ~$20 price difference isn't a huge deal; I wouldn't mind spending extra for a better mouse. But is it really better? Any input is appreciated.

I've got a G7 (from a MX1000) and I love it. I've also got a MX510 . The G7 is the hands down best.

(G7 = G5 sans cable)

get G5 its better than mx-518. or you could go with that colorful wireless mouse the G7.

Thanks for the replies. So Stangs55, you haven't noticed any "laginess" from a wireless mouse? I was never sure if that was just a myth.

I can tell you the MX1000 is one of the best I've used. I've heard a few people complain about the G5 (the gripping for one, and the scroll wheel for another), but I may pick up a G7 just to see how it works.

Tried the MX518.

Razer Diamondback pwns it BADLY. Way, WAY more comfortable (the fake ergonomics of the Logitech MX mice - basically just tilting your whole hand sideways so it drags irritatingly on the pad - SUCKS).

I can't imagine the G5, which somehow omits one of the important side buttons, will hold a candle to Razer's Copperhead, as a result.

I actually like the ergonomics of the MX/G series a lot (the 518 is basically identical to the 700 that I use now). I fiddled with a Razer for a few seconds at the store, and it didn't seem very comfortable. Might be different once I got used to it.

It does piss me off that they took off the extra side button. I couldn't possibly imagine what the point of that was.

The Razer vs MX differences are interesting. I had a Diamondback at home for a month or so before buying the MX518 for the office. I'd "tried out" the mouse at Best Buy before deciding to get it (vs another Diamondback). It felt better.

Indeed, using it a whole day still feels somewhat more comfortable. For ONE day. After extended use, though - after a couple weeks, it kinda gets under your skin. It's a minor thing, but using the MX518 all day and coming home to use the Diamondback at night....after a few weeks, mind (this was NOT the initial feeling, or even after a couple days use)....the MX518 just starts grating. It's just that LITTLE bit less comfortable...just that LITTLE bit harder to move and less accurate....that after time makes you feel like your blood is boiling and you want to throw it out the window - LOL.

Using both over a period of time is really eye-opening. Initial impressions are QUITE misleading on both!

Do you notice any lag after not touch the mouse for let's say 2 mins. MX1000 shows some kind of a lag after a min or 2. It has to wake up from sleep.

I quite like the 'furry' texture of the G5, but I can see how it would annoy some people - see if you can find one and get your opinion of it.

What irks me about it the most though, is that it claims to be HID compliant but the side button doesn't work in games with just the driver. Why this is the case I have no idea, but it's very annoying ( I make extensive use of the forward side button )

I have heard that if you pick up the G5 and then set it back down on the mouse pad it will not work properly, Is this true?

I had the MX510 before and I really like it.
However, once I upgraded to the G5, there is no going back.

I went from the MX500 to the G5. The MX500 has both sides button, And the be honest the loss of 1 button didn't make that much of a difference. if u still wanna page back and forth in IE just program the scroll wheel for it. And since my Keyboard has forward and back buttons on it not a loss. The grip is fine, got use to it after like 2 days of use and like it now, mouse isn't as slippery. As for everything else Precision, movement, speed the G5 owns the mx500 hands down. I use my Mx500 at work now and the G5 at home. Very noticeable difference. As for the Weights making the mouse flimsy that is a load of bullshit, and u probably have never used a G5. I adjust the weight the first time I used the mouse, haven't touched it since.

Jader what u heard affects the MX1000 not the G series mice. And since the G5 is corded, its more of a wireless issue.

I used the G5 for awhile, while waiting for a replacement on my dead mx510. Used it for about a week. Adjustable weights are nice on it, but I think they should have made a few heavier weights. I think the scroll button on the G5 was too large. I'd used the mx510 for about 8 months before it died and it was very comfortable, while the scroll button just stuck out a bit too much on the G5. Adjustable dpi is a cool feature though.
Logitech was nice enough to replace my blue mx510 with a silvery/blue mx518. Been using it for about a week an a half now and I like it. Scroll button doesn't stick out like the G5 so that's a plus to me at least.

Johnnqq I was referring to the Side movement in the scroll wheel of the G5. Which u can use to go forward and back in websites, which you could do with the 2 sides buttons on the previous mouses.
