I would not recommend the DFGT wheel. I have a Logitech MOMO wheel that is probably 10 years old that I have been using; recently a friend bought a new DFGT and I got a chance to try it out... compared to even my old MOMO wheel, it's a piece of crap. It feels cheap, like something you would buy at Walmart for $50.
Hey no thats where i got mine! Though i paid like 70. The DFGT is a decent wheel IMO. It is cheap so they did cut corners in places but overall it feels just fine to me. if you are more casual like i am it will do just fine. if you are looking for hard core sim then no it wont cut it for you. Least thats my opinion of the whell.
To be fair, I only got to use it for about an hour. It just didn't feel nearly as well made as the old MOMO that I'm used to. It only took about 5 min to realize that the Fanatec was clearly in a different league than either of the Logitechs. You can buy a Fanatec with the regular pedals for less than the price of a G27, to me that would be a no brainer. You could always pick up the club sport pedals in the future.
Apparently the FFB is not working so well with the G27 and button mapping is not setup for the wheel. There is a big 11 page thread at logitech with people recommending not to get this wheel for GT5.
I am leaning at this point on spending the money towards the Fanatec side but if I get into the F1 series more I might change my mind again. This sucks.
I have a G27 and have beaten GT5 with it. It's really a great wheel in terms of sensitivity and feedback. If you're interested in the clutch though, I would pass if you know how to drive a real manual car. There is no feedback in the clutch so you don't get any sense of realism if you know what a real clutch feels like. If you don't know how to drive manual, you might enjoy it however. My neighbor with the same wheel really enjoys driving it in manual mode.
The paddle shifters are really top notch though. I played my way through GT5 using the paddle shifters, and they are the best paddle shifters I've seen on a wheel. However, given the cost of the wheel, I would probably go back and buy the Driving Force GT for less than half the price.
Also keep in mind that a wheel is only as good as its stand. If you don't buy a good sturdy(expensive) stand, then the wheel will not be enjoyable to use so don't even bother with getting the wheel.
Anyone use a wheel stand and a regular chair? The Fanatec RennSport Wheel Stand (V2) and the Wheelstandpro seem to be the most popular.
I'm using the Driving Force GT for GT5. Turns out I'm horrible at simulated driving using a wheel.
I use the DAVE stand from IKEA as the base for the wheel. Need to install a weigh on the bottom to stabilize the wheel and accelerator/break base.
I use the wheelstandpro with the Fanatec 911 Turbo S and clubsport pedals. I had to drill the top plate to screw the Fanatec wheel down since it's designed for the G25, but very stable now. The weight of the clubsport pedals stops it from moving around.
