Logitech cordless mouseman optical questions

I have this mouse and the latest software from the logitech site. the mouse is also the proper distance from the receiver. Here are my problems:
1. In 3d shooters, the mousewheel will be really unresponsive when trying to change weapons with it or sometimes not work. How can I fix this?
2. How can I get the side mouse button to be detected and work in these games?
I have it in the PS/2 port. Would connecting it to the USB make it any better?
Any suggestions

1) Your PC maybe using most of its memory on the game itself and it takes time for the mouse to send its signals to the CPU. (guess)
2) ok...this may sound confusing but:
Set the side button as one of the keys in your game. --for example) Double click = Change weapons
So if ALT was JUMP in your game, set the side button on ALT.
