The cordless freedom optical combo is decent for gaming. The mouse is a bit heavy and cumbersome, and does take time to get used to. Its not bad for gaming at all though once you are used to it. I never had any of those issues with skipping that some people complain about from optical mice, the only real annoyance from ball mice is having to pick up the mouse to recenter it. You get used to that as well. As for its performance in games, I've used it in FPS, RTS and everything else out there, and its accuracy is fine. I got to #1 on Quakesh!t rankings for July in Soldier of Fortune 2, so I guess its accuracy was ok 😉 The one thing that definitely sux tho is its battery consumption. I ran through a new set every few weeks.
They have a new "elite" combo, but I can't tell the difference. I think the new keyboard only uses 2 AA instead of 4 and the mouse might be a bit better. I would actually go for the keyboard by itself for around $50 and get the MX700. As someone mentioned, it is a much better solution now. The optical has a much higher refresh rate and is working off the 125hz USB bus instead of the ps/2 port. Its also much nicer ergonomically, has a rechargeable stand, and weighs less. It can actually be had for ~45 at Amazon right now AR. I like it a lot more than the one that came in the combo. The only downside of getting both separately is you'll probably have 2 remote receivers, adding to clutter on your desktop, whereas the combo has 1 receiver for both.
