I have a windows XP service pack 2 machine. When I turn it on it goes through the XP pro loading screen then it goes to the screen that would normally have the login prompt however the login prompt never loads. I tried going into safe mode with the same symptom.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Thanks for the response, I wish it was that easy. The pc when cold booted will get to the screen where a logon prompt is supposed to come up. However it just sits displaying the HP background image. As stated before I did try to get into safe mode but it just sits on a blank screen with the safe mode messages along the corners of the screen. The biggest problem is I can not get into the operating system to see what is going on. I went ahead an hooked the HD up to another pc and scanned it for Virus's. It found 1 virus but removing the virus did not seem to help.

Do a repair install from the windows disc.
