Logged in and out

I have never understood how you can be logged in and logged out at the same time.
If you come to the site and do not log in but go to one of the forums and want to reply in a thread the reply screen has you log in to reply, when you go back to the thread sometimes you are still logged in and sometimes not, but you are never logged in when you go back to the 1st page but if you then go to another thread you are still logged on.
