I think there's a chance, but who do you give the award to?
Heck, best actor if he was given more camera time. That was one of the most awesome character I've seen in a loooong time
The audience was really into it and really reacted to Gollum.

Doubt the academy would even nominate him...to win an acting award it seems you have to play a role of a mental patient, or some other person who goes through some kind of "life-changing trauma."

So stick him in a hospital and wait for the third movie...

Gollum kinda fills that role don't you think? I can imagine Gollum now holding the award, "My Preeecious"
Those nasty, filthy, wicked actors don't deserve the award.

Isn't he computer animated? Who would you give it to? The artists?

it's best actor, not best character.

Gollum doesn't count as a mental patient?

There was an actor behind Gollum, along with a team of 3d modelers, animators and so on.

Watch how the film was made. It was an actor, in all of the scenes. The CGI was overlaid.

I haven't watched it yet. So I'll take your word for it. :)

Then after he acted in all the scenes with Frodo and Sam he did the incredible voice acting (it's actually his voice....not digitall altered) and also all the motion capture for every scene. New Line IS pushing Andy Serkis for some kind of award last I heard, but the academy is too old fashioned to even consider it IMO. I'd be very surprised.

Gollum's performance made me wish I hadn't read the books though, I think much of Gollum's performance was lost on me. Imagine how suspenseful it would have been if you didn't know the storyline. I know my little cousin's were unsure of Gollum's next moves throughout.

wow, now that would be tedious. I imagine a lot of the facial stuff had to be keyframed. You can only motion capture his face so much

alot of hard work, think the scene where he splaces in the water and tries to grab a fish was entirely keyframed. And I think all the facial movements where keyframed, though not sure, dont think Serkis has a face that stretchy ;)

Actually, almost all of the facial acting was truely that of Serkis. That was to make the facial movement as realistic as possible.

***SLIGHT, UNIMPORTANT SPOILER***

The scene where he pulled Frodo out of the water was the actor himself, where they just replaced him with Gollum afterwards. For a lot of other scenes they just let Frodo and Sam act without him there, and let the actor do all the acting offstage in a suit, where sensors on the suit caused the computer image to move along. To choose the best solution they shot all his scenes twice: Once with him, and once without.

The role gave him back problems btw :)

Scene three, Serkis and a bluescreen

As I already said :)

(Or at least I meant that, let's just say they shot it 2 1/2 times :p )
