Lockups - PSU to blame?

Well, recently I've been getting a complete freeze while playing games on my comp. It definitely seems like it could be the power supply, but the PSU is new, and is supposed to be decent. Although it doesn't happen often, maybe only once every few days, it's still annoying. When it happens, there is no bsod; the game locks up, but I can still move my cursor, then a couple seconds later it locks up completely, with the game still on the screen.

Using SmartGuardian, I get voltages of 11.77 while idle, but during games, it fluctuates between 11.64 and 11.71. I'm not sure if this is normal, or maybe I need a new one. PSU in question is a Fortron Blue Storm 500W. Other relevant specs; Opteron 144 @ 2.75, eVGA 7800gt. So it shouldn't be having a problem feeding it power. If the voltages are low and possibly out of spec, do you think I have a chance of RMAing it? Thanks for any help.

Not PSU related all i can say. Seems like maybe a CPU driver or RAM issue. if it was your PSU you would just crash and it would reboot.

The voltages aren't that tight, that's true, and they could possibly be causing your lockups... The Fortron Blue Storm is a great PSU, but you can always have a sample that's not as stable (or that has lower values)...

No idea about the RMAing though...

Set your CPU to default speeds and run it for up to a week to confirm that is not the culprit.

Wow, thanks for the fast replies. I actually decreased my OC yesterday to see if that was the problem, and I haven't had a problem since. But then again, I haven't gamed much since.

And yes, I forgot to mention ram. It's 2x1gb G.Skill Extreme DDR500. It's running at stock 250mhz, and stock 3-4-4-8 timings. Memtest86+ stable through all tests. I tried tightening them, but got problems.

I'll give it a couple days at the lower settings, and if it's fine, then I guess I'll have my answer. Thanks for the quick replies 🙂
