Win98se with IE 5.5 upgrade

System several months old and rock stable until a week ago. Get lockups exclusively when in IE and clicking on a link. Have to do hard reboot. Then I have to repair IE. It seemed like a software problem BUT...
Things I've tried: reformat and reinstall Win98se (ugh!), extensive search of the Microsoft help site. reinstall video drivers (including older versions), reinstall sound drivers, try with Intel ATA100 drivers and with Windows HDD drivers. Nothing so far works.
Current plans: I'm thinking it is a hardware problem and since the Cusl2 has it's own onboard video, I'm going to change to it and see if excluding the Annihilator2 card solves the problem.
Anybody experience this and can possibly help?
