Lockups after installing PCI Firewire card

Just yesterday I tried installing my Adaptec FireConnect Firewire PCI card.
It looked like everything installed just fine. It is the only PCI card I have in the system.
It was recognized as planned at the next powerup.

a few minutes later the entire system froze. It seems I can't do much without it freezing and forcing a reset. I did manage to play UT2k3 for about 2 minutes before it froze once.
I removed the card and have had no probs since.

I have a P4-2.53 on a Soyo P4X400 Dragon Ultra MB. The only thing overclocked is my video card. I am using the onboard sound which has been working great.

At this point I have more faith in the Adaptec Card than the Soyo motherboard. On the Soyo site, for PCI lockups they recommend putting the PCI card on the bottom slot. what is the difference for different slots? I tried the slot next to my vid card and the one furthest away. lockups both places.

any ideas? ACPI?

Yes I tried different slots. Slot 1 and I think Slot 4. Slot 5 would have butted it right next to my AGP vid card. From what I read in the MB manual Slot 1 and 5 share something. And I think Slot 4 shares something with the onboard Raid controller. I am going to try slot 2 when I get home today. I think thats the only one that doesn't share.

i'm sure there is a conflict somewhere...load up ur hardware manager...u see some kind of conflict...just change the memory addresses for each conflict....
if not...then it's just incompatibility btwn ur chipset and adaptec's card...return it and get a different brand..and that should do it...

Am running a P4 2.53 w/Radeon 8500 on Asus P4Pe - and it is the epitomy of stability - not a bit of freeze up or lockup. My suggestion is to back off the overclocking of your video card and try standard. Freezes like you described are almost always attributed to a video card!
