Lockup while running 3DMark2001?

I'm testing out a new system I just got done building (see sig for system info) and whenever I run 3DMark, it locks up about 10 seconds into the first demo. Full system lockup, no ctrl-alt-del available. I haven't started to o/c my CPU and my video card (Gainward GF3 Ti200 GS) is set for performance level, but not oc'd past that.

My CPU temp is 45-52C and board temp is around 23C (too high for the cooling I have, but I'm working on that...), so I don't think it's heat-related. Running Detonator 28.32 on XP Pro. Any suggestions?

give us more details about the system it usually helps. but 52 is high that could be a heat problem.

WELCOME TO THE LOOP!
Join thousands of others that have gone before you.

Hard lock, or jump back to desktop, or instant blackscreen, or instantaneous reboot.

Your only salvation:
Reinstall XP with 2X AGP set in BIOS, install 4 in 1 agp in standard mode (1X 2X)
use 21.83WHQL

Bozo, I've had 3 of the 4 happen to me (no blackscreen). :(

No problem reinstalling XP - system is freshly created, so I won't lose much.

I understand about changing the AGP setting in the BIOS to 2X, not familiar with how to install 4 in 1 agp in standard mode (1X 2X). Do you mean install the 4 in 1 while AGP is set to 2X? Also, once all is installed, I hope I can bump AGP back to 4X, right? If so, do I then need to reinstall the 4 in 1 AGP when set at 4X?

As far as 21.83 drivers are concerned, I should then not install any of the software that came with my Gainward card and just stick to the Detonator reference drivers?

Thanks!

just install the detonators from NVidia dont use the one came with the card.
45-52 is a little high for an XP. xp usually run cooler than that. make sure that the 80mm fan is blowin down the cpu and make sure its on right with the thermal paste. when you install your 4.1 drivers , reset your board and fix your proc clock and install everything from fresh. once you get everything installed upyour agp to 4x and try it then.

XP sets registry to bios settings during setup, thats why its no good to change to 2X AFTER install

If you install 4 in 1 in "quickinstall" it will put in "Turbo" or 4X Gart drivers (BAD)
If you install 4 in 1 in normal autoinstall, you can CHOOSE whether to install "turbo" (4X) or "standard" AGP
(1X-2X) ON THAT PAGE

Note: You do not need to install ANY 4 in 1 in XP: it loads its own VIA drivers at setup - approx 4.26
I would only load the IDE busmaster, NOTHING ELSE.

21.83 WHQL are most stable of drivers

You MUST go to www.viaarena.com and read the whole all about the loop post by VIA on thier forums.

Your 2 512MB RAMs are a killer - RAM sucks at load 10W/128MB or 80W in your case

If you want to see why your system craps out, just run latest Motherboard monitor, log the 3 voltages -
+5.0V, +3.3V, +12V at slowest increments, and you will see the following

Note that at 12:14:08 the +3.3V line (which derives the 1.5V for GeForce) drops to ZERO at attempted
initialization of 3DMark 2001..............Theres your hard freeze fella.

Also this

Edit:
You CANNOT RUN 4X on your particular individual system, if it freezes it has told you its a no go.
You DO NOT CHANGE IT BACK.
You lose little or nothing at 2X

Bozo,

Thanks for the very specific info! Before I tried it, I pulled out one of the 512MB DIMMS to see what would happen. Believe it or not, my system is working fine right now. I haven't swapped the two DIMMS to see if one was bad yet - been running tests to make sure all is good. So far, I've run 3DMark about 20 times and no lockups yet. :)

The way this mobo is set up, the PAL8045 is only a few mm from the RAM in Bank 0, so I'm wondering if it was heating the RAM too much. I put the single DIMM in the 2nd bank, and no problems. I'm going to try the RAM in the 2nd and 3rd banks to see if that fixes the problem, after determining whether one of them is bad. If it just won't work with both, I'll sell both of them and buy some PC2700 to take full advantage of the chipset.

Thanks again! :D

Same thing happens with me after I upgraded to 512MB ram but I rather have 512 ram then have 3dmark working.
