Lockup Problems

I get a strange lockup when playing games. I don't play much other than Halflife, which is where it happens most, but I can say it has happened more than once in NeedForSpeed5😛U. During the freeze, the keyboard doesn't respond, mouse doesn't respond, and a 2 second sound segment loops until the freeze is over. The time this freeze last varries, sometimes it goes away after a few seconds, sometimes I have to hit the power button. This is VERY VERY annoying. Im playing some Halflife Counterstrike, I freeze, get capped, and then unfreeze 3 rounds later to find myself dead! I cannot say I have any ideas of why this happens either. I have tried reformatting more than once. Ive tried running Windows 2000, Windows98 and 95 and Windows Millenium (which is what I am running now) and it happens every time. Sometimes Im lucky and I dont freeze but that is rare. My system specs are as follows:

Pentium 3 550mhz sse retail - not overclocked
256megs pc133 ram
abit be6II mobo
Ibm deskstar34gxp 7200rpm ata66 27 gig hd
toshiba 8x dvd
yamaha scsi 8x burner
asus v6600 deluxe
soundblaster live soundcard (I had an aureal too, same prob occured)
inwin q500 full tower

I have alot of COOLING fans. I specifically purchased an extra 3 or 4. It could still be a cooling problem though because it gets really hot during the summer in this basement. heh.
And the problem only occurs when playing games.
Any suggestions? Really need a fix.

Try this:

Go to Start/programs/accessories/system tools/system information/tools/system configuration utility/startup

Uncheck everything except for scan registry, system tray, and loadpowerprofile.

Another thing to do is get Cacheman and set it up for poweruser.

If that does not work, backup your critical data and format your hard drive from a boot disk using fdisk and put a fresh copy of windows on the drive. If that does not work start replacing hardware starting with the hard drive and video card.

Do ya think it's up high enough now?

Try adjusting the VIO voltage. Either it's too high, or it's too low.

What version drivers are you useing for you geforce? I used to have a problem with the newer drivers that made it so HL wouldnt even start, trying useing the default drivers first and go up one version at a time.

You Video I/O is changed in your bios

Good luck, I miss counterstrike.....🙂

Right now I am using the latest availble from Asus, non beta releas, 3.75 and I am using Dx8 Beta. But I have tried all drivers, defaults and what not and nothing worked. I even tried the Deno drivers from nvidia without any luck. Im going to try changing my vio voltage now..

Do you have anything sharing an IRQ? Namely the sound card? I'd rule out a problem with the sound card (except possibly IRQ) since you changed the card and it is still there. I would suspect its a video problem. Or possibly a DX8.
It reminds me of when I first connect with my win modem. It will stutter as the modem sucks the life out of the processor for a second while it initializes. Do you have any antivirus or system agent programs running?

Nope. Er. I dont even have a modem installed. I got a sound card, scsi card, ethernet card and vid card. Im trying to tweak the vid i/o level. And It cant be dx8 cuz like I said, I have reformated, tried Dx6, 7 and 8.
