Lockup probelem with C&C generals game

My friend got a new computer recently and he has probelms running Command and Conquer generals. At random times the game locks up and music either stops or loops over and over. He can't move the mouse, alt tab, alt f4, or ctrl alt delete to see what the problem is. The only way to fix the problem is to reset computer. There are no scratches on the cd, and the computer is not overheating.

My old system used to do the exact same thing...I never really pinpointed the exact cause but I did narrow it down to two things...

Crap RAM or crap PSU...

My old system was quite different than my rig now...it was this:

ECS K7VZA
Athlon XP 1700+
512MB PC133 (Generic)
400w PSU (Generic)
30GB Western Digital HDD
Hercules 3D Prophet II MX
Soundblaster Live MP3+

Like I said...totally different...
