Locking windows

So, since my roommate is constantly snooping on my computer, I've lately taken to pressing [Windows]+L to lock it out, but the thing is, I want a snarky message to appear instead of just the login screen. I don't want to shell out $10-30 for a seperate locking program, and using it as a screensaver doesn't offer me the ability to just hit the keys to lock it (as far as I know). Is there any way to do this?

Confronting him has only yielded him not telling me after he does it, but the keylogger tells all. At least he has the decency to look embarrased.

Pee Ess I will never let my pen15 near the face of another man. There are too many things that can go wrong with that.

And yet he's continued to persist in trying to snoop around on your computer?

i c, well then could you just set up your screen saver to resume on password? and in the screen saver have a nice little memo for him?

Yeah, IIRC in Windows XP, setting resume on password sends it to the Welcome Screen. Oh, I see you mentioned you didn't like that idea because you lose your Window+L hotkey use, but I think the screensaver has a hotkey also. Maybe Window+S? I'll try it now...ssssssssssss
Bummer, didn't work. I'm pretty sure there is some way to assign a hotkey to the screensaver though.

It would certainly get your point across though, eh?

Use reshacker to open up the login screen executable (just google on how to change your log-in screen). There's a little message in the bottom right of the screen, says someting like add users after you login or something. You can edit that string in res-hacker to say whatever you want (along with any other text in the login screen). You can also change the bitmap in the background.

if it's a third party tool, he doesn't want to download one.

He said he doesn't want to spend any money. Reshack is a freeware.

I've got it so it displays it as the "legal notice" at startup, but I can't find loginui.exe. For some reason, I don't have a visible system_32 folder, nor can I find one while trying to make all folders visible. Search doesn't help either.

I bet your roommate deleted it.

(you know it's system32, not system_32, right?)

Either way, it's not there. And the file (loginui.exe) doesn't show up anywhere, either.

If system32 was deleted, wouldn't the computer crash pretty fatally?

Just do it the easy and free way and do this:

First go to user accounts and add a password to your account. Next uncheck "use welcome screen", this will make windows use a regular login box (you can try with welcome screen enabled to see if the following works when it's enabled)

Then on the desktop right click-->properties-->screen saver--> and enable password on resume.

Next goto start-->run and type gpedit.msc goto: Computer Configuration - Windows Settings - Security Settings - Local Policies - Security Options and set the 'Message text for users attempting to log on' and 'Message title for users attempting to log on. From there you can write any message you want.
In that same section there are alot of options you can enable so look around.

I was actually kidding about it getting deleted. I'm pretty sure Windows will not run without the system32 folder. It is a very VERY important folder.
