I am looking for a really small FREE program for locking windows 98. I just need to keep people from using this computer. Has anyone used something like this? Any ideas.

thanks

sounds like what you're looking for is policy editor(poledit.exe is the filename, i believe). it comes with windows 98. it works well for securing access to a pc.

what i am looking for is a login similiar to that of nt, win2k, XP that will allow me to block access to use the computer. can the policy editor do something like that. i dont need to give access to only certain areas, i just want a password to lock the computer when it is not being used.

Password protecting a Windows 98 box is pretty much useless, since anyone who knows a little bit about Windows can easily hack around it. But one option you have is to put a screensaver (even just the blank screen one if you desire) and set a password for it. But forget boot-time passwords, since they won't stop anybody and are all too easy to bypass (just click cancel).

i am looking for a freeware progam to do just this, i want an alternative to the password protection built into win98.

thanks

CrashCourseSoftware

The next best thing for locking Win9X systems. Unfortunately, it is NOT freeware, but you can use it under a trial license. Has ability to lock machines like NT/2K/XP, and does also incorporate boot-time locking. Just remember to create an emergency boot disk incase you lose/forget your password, otherwise you are fubar'd.
