This is not a commentary on any single event but an observation in sum about recent PFI activity.
Standard practice appears to be that PFI threads remain open while the most involved parties have their say and then are locked while the mods take the evidence back to the batcave to ruminate on it. It seems that often redundant PFI threads are then started or the arguments spill back over into the regular forums.
I completely understand the reason for the lock during mod discussion, I think. It prevents things from escalating into a full scale flamewar while the issue is sorted out.
I would like to suggest that usual practice leaves the PFI threads open during mod discussion. It would help contain the spillover and prevent carrying arguments into there, allow users to still have a voice (even if it's a pointless voice and is ignored by the mods) and maybe letting some of those arguments go on would let the initial issue solve itself... mods trying to decide whether someone deserves a ban on a sketchy issue would have an easier time deciding if the person just blows a gasket in the ongoing PFI thread.
I think it's human nature for people to want to talk out/yell out their differences online, and PFI provides a good place for that without interfering with the other forums.
*cowers* Please don't ban me! 😛
