The guy obviously found it through Google. Others looking for the answer through Google will obviously land there too. A sight that sells ads and gets paid for views might as well have the answer, and having the answer will boost the search rankings even further. Even if you assum that the OP is the only thing in the world that matters, you are assuming that it doesn't matter.

he wasnt looking for an answer - he was giving an answer which nobody will ever bother to read. as i made clear in my above post.
not only that, but most 5 year old threads are unlikely to have any of the original posters in them. anyone reopening one is essentially asking people to read the whole thing.

instead, you'd open a new thread asking "what is this or that" and either A) you get a link to the answer in the closed thread or B) someone who knows the answer is there will copy-paste it (assuming a 5 year old answer is worth anything).

oh btw
if i have my 18.1 inch LCD with the 110v power inlet, will it work in the UK? is the power converter on the plug sufficient to deal with 220v instead of 110v?

is it that way for all equipment? how do you know what will work on our system and what will work on theirs?

you need a voltage converter, as said before.
i'm sure you have waited 12 years for the answer, you must be in dire need of that LCD by now.

DigDog, it's a public discussion and someone came across it. That means anyone else could come across it too, and new information just might be useful. What's the big deal?

I remember trying to play Crysis at 2560x1600. A UI quirk that made it *seem* like that resolution could not be selected. I Googled the problem and found no help. Just other people with the same problem. After I figured it out, I went to update a thread (one of the top Google hits) and found that there was no option to reply...based solely on the age of the thread. I remember editing the DOM to enable the submit button anyway, but I don't remember if it really posted.

That kind of BS discourages social participation. Anyone running a forum needs to actively avoid doing that.

I've often found that the original "solution" is outdated and I've wanted to post updated information, but could not.

A necro bump should not bother you. The solution to the "problem" of necro bumping is to ban people from complaining about necro bumps. :colbert:

There are plenty of examples of discussions that can last several years. Coming from Rage3D, there's an active thread from a decade ago regarding stereoscopic 3D, still going on strong (although there may be weeks or months between replies, the information provided is almost always valuable).

Game threads can last years if there are plenty of substantial updates, progress or news to comment on.

In fact, Rage3D and other sites encourage consolidating discussions to an already active thread, not making endlessly new ones for the same topic.

I posted a followup topic for a discussion here not too long ago and it got locked for being a necro (of only 1 year! ). Utter BS.

For a site that just put out an article stating they got purchased by Purch and need the advertisement revenue, the forums sure push people away with this nonsense. And suddenly, I don't feel too bad in using an adblocker.

you would still use ad blocker regardless and at 95 posts, I see you are one of the super contributors...
