Locking down a Windows XP Home box?

As far as keeping spyware from installing and editing the registry, is there anything within XP Home that would disallow this? I know for a fact I've used a limited account and was still able to gain access to the registry as well as add/delete things. Is there anything else that could stop this from happening?
