Awhile ago i was having seemingly random lockups normally while gaming. I had pretty much narrowed it down to my Audigy 2 zs card. After switching to Standard PC HAL the problems seemed to mostly go away... for a couple weeks. then it started up again, altho not as often. finally got fed up and uninstalled all card drivers/software etc so the card didnt exist according to my machine... too lazy to take it out however so it stayed in for awhile...
well occasionally i got another random lock-up while gaming after this and tonite finally got fed up with it and removed the card physically from my mobo... problem fixed, right?
wrong. booted up again and within 15 minutes system locked up hard again middle of my game. curious... well i did have a dying stock HSF on my GF4 ti 4200 card that i havent gotten aroud to switching out for the replacement... i figure thats the problem. being in no situation to do the switch now, at 2 AM, i decide to find a temp solutin to cool the card... so i rigged up a spare 80mm fan to blow directly over the gpu HS and ram HS's. before they were quite hot to the touch, now running much cooler. figured the problem was fixed.
fire up my game again and bam! 15 minutes in it locks up on me exactly like before. i find it highly unlikly that the vid card is overheating now, as the HS is as cool as it has been while running in months, probably. the soundcard has been ruled out... what next? here are my specs:
Antec TrueBlue 480W PSU
ASUS a7v8x-x mobo
AMD 2600+ stock settings
768 MB PC2700 stock RAM
Chaintech GF4 Ti 4200 8x
Mad Dog 52x CDRW drive
Generic DVDrom drive
80GB 7200 rpm Maxtor HDD (master)
120GB 7200 rpm WD HDD (slave)
my next guess would be to run memtest on my ram but it seems odd it was fine before... system temps should not be a problem as the cpu (according to asus probe and mobo monitor) temp is between 45-50 C most the time and system temp is under 30C... cooler now most likely because i have the side panel off to allow the 80mm fan to blow on the vid card...
