I'm a Cal Alum, but I did my fair share of computing support at Cal in my 4 years.
My understanding about the backbone is that ALL I2 (Internet 2) schools and organizations partake in this ultra-high speed connection, and as long as you have the right IP address for that subnet, any traffic to and from that computer will be on the I2 link.
That said, there shouldn't be a "hub" or "gateway." You just find what the address is on the remote side and connect to it and you are automatically taking advantage of the higher throughput pipe.
