You can't look at it as just "fixing" it. Does your company permit you to make decisions like that on your own for your own computer?
And who's paying for it?

I would have to wonder about you. Why didn't you just reinstall Office 97?

I actually paid for the software myself, and also, I already donated a brand new Samsung laser printer to another store I was working at previous to my promotion.

I'm just scared that my CEO will get pissed! I know he shouldn't, because I wouldn't. I'm just looking out for the company. If my MS WORD 97 can't work, what do I do? I don't even think he has the CD anymore. So, therefore I improhize (sp) and get MS WORD 2002 out of my own pocket!

My CEO is a businessman, not a tech guy. He probably wouldn't know the difference.
However, my CTO, Director and me would give you a nice tonguelashing for it.
Often times the guy who causes the most problems aroudn the office is the guy who knows something about computers and thinks he can "take the load" off of the IT guys. Call it False Authority Syndrome. Call it "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing."
All I know that the the very least it's going to throw my licensing counts, and it could get worse.
If you have a legitimate need, submit a trouble ticket, cal lthe help desk, call the CTO if your company is small enough or you are high enough.
Don't do it yourself.

Of course, being a smart security garse that I am, I already have you not being an admin of your workstation so you wouldn't be able to install it either way ;)

How big is the company?
What are the ramifications of you installing Office XP?
Did you charge purchase to the company?
If so, did anybody authorize this purchase?

No I'm not installing Office XP, just WORD XP. I bought WORD XP from someone on this forum legitly with a eula/legit cd-key. I am not implying WAREZ here. Trust me, I would never touch that with a ten foot pole. I'm talking about a legit copy of MS WORD. My current one cannot work. It does not work at all.

I'M NOT IMPLYING WAREZ, YOU ALL SEEM TO THINK IM IMPLYING WAREZ!

The company is extremely small. The CEO is a little tech savvy but I don't know if he would know if it was different.

I am donating this copy to the company anyhow. I do not wish to use it on my own personal computer, ONLY at my work computer.

NO, I paid for the software out of my own pocket. I also planned on purchasing MS OFFICE XP out of my own pocket.

Uh, who was implying that? And Office XP, Word XP, what-the-hell-ever. Odds are you have no business installing either without the authorization of IT. If you did, you wouldn't be here asking us.

I currently do not hold any of the software at my kiosk. I have no cds with Office 97 on it and the last I heard from another manager is that he "lost" the cd.

Nice trolling man. I said I bought the software, Johnnie from this very FORUM can verify for me that I purchased it legally. I would never install any type of WAREZ on an office or home machine. OK?

I'm trying to clearly state that this is a legit software that I purchased. I am trying to get that across because someone already implied that I "downloaded" the software off Kazaa when in reality I bought it from Johnnie who is apart of this very Anandtech Forum community.

Troll. He has already stated explicitly that he bought a legal copy.

Honestly, no clue. I think it would just be best to let my CEO know that my Office 97 word is broken and if I can install Word XP. I was just curious because I am afraid to talk to him. Just get really anxious/scared.

Where I work you don't install jack without permission .You might want to run this by whoever's in charge of MS audit compliance in your company.

I would peobably get annoyed by all your hypothetical and entirely subjective questions on trivial topics, if I was a CEO.

You probably work at a fortune 500 company, I work at a company where there are roughly 10 - 15 employees total that is including the CEO/VP/Human resources.

I don't know what your company's policy is about installing hardware and software,
but in my company we cannot add software/hardware because we lease our computers
and Dell/IBM provides support and if we (employees) add anything to our computer
Dell/IBM will not provide support for that computer. So, we are instructed to have
Dell/IBM techs anything on our computer.

I would be upset with myself - my company should be doing well enough to atleast provide software that works :) Unless your 'gift' could cause some auditing or tax issues, I doubt it should matter. OTOH, your CEO might feel offended :p

There are a lot of more factors that I need to know before I decide whether it is right or wrong.

He's an extremely busy guy and our true tech support works for free and I don't know when he would be able to come down. I'm sure all it would take is a re-installation of MS OFFICE 97 and that would be that. But, I like being up-to-date with things. Even though I'm paying for it out of my own pocket. I mean I am just trying to do the company a favor.
