localtalk -> ethernet adapters for printers?

If I understand correctly, you would need to plug the computer and the adapter into a hub so that the computer still has a connection to the rest of the network, since otherwise its ethernet port would be taken up by the adapter. How would I set it up though if I do not want the printer to be visible to the rest of the network but only the one other machine on the hub?

thanks

I've never seen printer firmware that would let you limit who can get to a printer. Why not just plug the printer in parallel to the computer?

???😕

What print server/printer adapter are you asking about? Helps narrow down the best solution.

Searching for a printer attached to another computer is ALOT easier than searching for a dedicated print server with a printer.

Generally other computers CAN'T see the print server unless they either:
-know the ip address of the print server
-search for it with discovery software
-install the print server client software

I have 2 printers on the network like you describe, only the big-wigs have access, the rest of the network can't see them at all unless they knew ip address, or searched with discovery software.

In a domain setting you can use access lists to block users from printers attached to other computers, even if its attached to Win98 computers.

I maybe a litte late in replying. But I think what you need is a ethernet-print server. An example of that is the print server offered by Hawkings Technology
model PN7117. I have my HP1100 AIW hookup to the print server and I load the print server software to each computer in my network and everything is detected automatically and with a bit of tweaking if you are using XP
you can have anyone of your computer being able to print without having the more then one PC on. I forgot where I bought mine but I am sure someone else can point you to it now that you know what solution you are looking for.

Basically the setup is as follow: All PCs connected to switch/hub and the print server's RJ45 connect to the switch/hubs 10/100 baseT connection
load the software onto PCs and let you should be able to print.
